This isn’t really true… If anything the singles would be a better argument to make. CD sold 441k first week and is at 4 million now. But he had 4 top 20 hits and 2 of those were top 10.

LR sold 860k first week and is at 4 million now and gold digger was a number 1 hit.

Graduation is the best album to support your argument. It sold 957k first week and is over 5 million total US and had a number 1 hit and a number 7 hit.

Album sales were much higher/easier back then but having high charting songs were much harder.

Drake has had sales higher than each of these in an era where it was much harder to sell albums (granted, not his first 3 but your argument was that Kanye was popping like drake with his first 3 albums). And while drake has also had a lot of success with his singles a decent amount of them (from him albums, particularly recently) were quickly at the top and then dropped just as fast.

Artists like Eminem and Wayne show that Kanye wasn’t quuuite the number one commercial phenom during that time even with high album sales.

Commercially it’s just hard to find anyone who is really at the same level as drake but I’d say Kanye does a better job keeping up commercially in terms of singles when you take into context how much easier it is to have top charting songs today (albeit usually very briefly).

For Kanye to have multiple big songs on each of his first 3 albums is very impressive. And rap wasn’t as prevalent and mainstream at the time as it is today.

There’s a lot of things that need to be taken into context in comparisons like this I think.

#1. selling 300k more than somebody first week is not in any world “close”
#2. MEME MUSIC? kanyes entire rollout was a meme and he created buzz with antics and literal MEMES. he took cudis verse off of the song at a listening party and replaced it with a meme. he delayed the album and lied about the date MULTIPLE times. he had the best rollout and most hype we’ve ever seen and sold 300k less than drake.
#3. Drake posted the art and said the albums coming sept 3rd and didn’t say another word about it. and sold 300k OVER kanye
