Their best record since VLV without question. It sounds like they stopped trying to be the biggest band in the world and just decided to be Coldplay again.
Exactly! Listened to Sunrise and Church on the way in to work today and felt blessed
Really damn good project. My only real complaint with the album is the lyrics for Eko. Why is Chris Martin telling us about what happens in Africa
But yeah, no doubt, this is their best record since VLV and perhaps their 2nd or 3rd best project overall.

Think they recorded some of the record in Africa

I mean just cuz they visited Africa doesn’t really mean the lyrics don’t come off as a whitewashed attempt at being “cultured”
What makes the other world influences work on the album is that they’ve gotten vocalists and artists from those cultures to directly write and contribute to those pieces

You don’t have to be black to simply be inspired by Africa bruh. You thinking on it a bit too hard. All the man said was that the rivers were perfect and the mother’s sing their children to sleep. It’s not like he said he invented it or something lmao

it’s just cringe to see some white dude singing about Africa and how perfect it is just cuz he stayed there in what was probably a super nice spot that is so far removed from those who live there.
It’s ironic you saying I’m thinking on it a bit too hard when you out here tryna dissect the one qualm I got with the album. It’s always bothered me too when coldplay has tried to become U2 2.0 with the whole internationally woke s*** cuz I find U2 absolutely cringe in every way and I think coldplay is far too talented to go down that same path. I like that they for the most part left the cultural stuff to the people who actually live it but Eko was the one time they let their U2 aspirations get ahold of em
S/o @Semiredacted for liking a post itt and reminding me. Album brings me back to brighter days that feel a lifetime ago now I was posting itt talking about driving to work lmao I haven’t done that in years
Especially compared to Music of the Spheres, this album’s massively underrated. It proves they’ve still got it even though they’ve been mostly choosing to water it down for the pop sound for the past decade.
The second half of the record in particular has some absolutely beautiful soundscapes. Eko would’ve been one of my favorite songs if not for the cringe ass appropriative lyrics as @MrYeezy called out. As it is, it’s still damn good along with Church, Trouble In Town, Arabesque, Cry Cry Cry, Old Friends and the title track.
