one of my favorite works of his
love the layers to his critiques of capitalism in it s*** is mindblowing
He was prolific when he was alive. Of course the value of his worked increased after his death but he wasn't a starving artist. He was earning over $1 million a year before he was 25. He was the youngest artist to ever take part in documenta in Kassel at the age of 21. At 22, he was the youngest to exhibit at the Whitney Biennial in New York. At 25, he was the youngest artist given an exhibition at Kestner-Gesellschaft in Hannover. He also collaborated with Andy Warhol, one of the most famous artist of all time. I think Basquiat would've had a good laugh that he surpassed Warhol with a new record high for an American artist at auction.
His top 3 paintings at auction are
1. Untitled (1982) - sold for $110.5 million in 2017
2. In This Case (1983) - sold for $93.1 million in 2021
3. Untitled (Devil) (1982) - sold for $57.3 million in 2016
Boy and Dog in a Johnnypump (1982) was purchased privately by Ken Griffin for over $100 million in 2020
His paintings always felt like they were ancient artifacts or something like that to me.
Something very tribal & mystic about them. Like Egyptian glyphs, cave paintings, aztec sculptures etc. Stuff from a time we cant fully understand, but know there is something deep to it.
Crazy its all within 50/60 years from today.
