Wait, by my count they're missing over a dozen films at least

They really need to f*** off with this "curated groups" order in these sets tho. The way they did the Bergman set was a nightmare as someone who prefers to watch a filmmaker's work chronologically if it's all available to me.

And the order of this Varda set looks just as ridiculous as bergman's

yeah that's donkey play. tartan and studio S might've been dumb enough to release the restored bergmans on DVD but at least it was chronological

also how could they not pick summer with monika as the opener in their curated box

Tbh I would almost rather criterion's bergman/varda boxes not even exist than have their filmogs on blu, but with some single discs containing 2-3 films separated by multiple decades

    ....almost

Yeah its their own "curated groupings" as they call em. Don't care for it at all, not just cause it's an inconvenience to watch the films chronologically, but because their groupings seem to be done by films with parallel subjects, forms, or genres — which can span a across multiple eras of the filmmaker's work, virtually erasing the sense of their artistic growth and developing a line of personal experience or authorship

And it's not like Criterion isn't aware that some people might prefer a chronological experience, cause the "Directed By" collections on Criterion Channel have all their films ordered by release date

I started with Smiles of a Summer Night (very good film but it's fitting because starting my summer break) then jump all the way to his first film, Crisis which was decent enough. After that it's just random placement whether it's themes or whatever. I'd care if they start with the few best Bergman's tbh

Yeah im fine with having it start out with a handful of "essentials" or most known films, but the rest of the groupings were more inconvenient for me than anything, especially the discs with multiple films from totally different eras/decades.

Looking at their "curated groups" for the Varda box, these two immediately stand out to me as annoying haha:

Around Paris — Cléo from 5 to 7 (1962), Les fiancés du pont Macdonald (1962), L’opéra-mouffe (1958), Les dites cariatides (1984), T'as de beaux escaliers, tu sais (1986)

Visual Artist — Faces Places, codirected with JR (2017), Salut les cubains (1964), Ulysse (1982), Ydessa, les ours et etc. . . . (2004)

Dates are all over the place
