why are those costumes? do they fall in the funny category or scary category, and why? they’re not made up characters, animals, or items. they’re making caricatures out of whole groups of people as a gag. it’s no different from white people dressing up in blackface with fried chicken and watermelon for a Halloween costume, if you need something to compare it to.

The fact that there's an asymmetry in how society judges white and black people doing the same thing still isn't cultural appropriation. They are presumably getting a hairstyle like that because they appreciate the style and its heritage, not because they want to use it as a weapon to disparage black people.
The reality is, for better or worse, nothing is exclusive in an allegedly multicultural society. There is no racial trademark or licensing for idiosyncrasies, nobody walking around with test kits to verify that you have sufficient African DNA to wear braids. White people are gonna do things black people invented, black people are gonna do things white people invented, and the same is true for every other demographic

Nah I’m not hearing this tbh. That style of braid is black culture. Black women been through hell and back for their hair so I’d be pissed too if Becky with them f***ed up loose braids get praised while I get denied opportunities for something that’s been a piece of my culture for a lifetime.
