What are good examples of this? Feels like all of them are terrible money grabs by people not affiliated with the artist

he had more than a decade to drop an album if he really wanted to, this just feels cheap to do it this quickly after his death, or ever tbh

This is gross. Don’t care if it was 99% done. He only released 3 albums ever. How are you gonna have the ego to mess with a catalog like that?

Yeah the fact quest is talking about it like this and says “this record” in this interview, this soon after he passed is actually crazy

Too soon dude. This doesn’t feel right just feels like impulsive

    Yeah this seems rushed.

Am I misremembering or was he rumored to drop something over the last two years or so? Only way it seems right to announce this respectfully but I hope they handle it with grace nonetheless

There's also a Sly Stone cover that MJ did that D'Angelo recorded vocals on for one of the posthumous Mike albums that released, but it didn't make the cut. We need that too.

  • Nov 11, 2025

I don’t like posthumous releases but I like to think he was at least 80% done with this with as long as he was taking

  • I'm sure they're honoring his wishes. He had been recording new music for years.

I’m always interested to know if a dying artist gives others the approval to release their work posthumously. I mean, they had to have had this talk, right? D’Angelo knew he was dying after all

these guys are friends. close ones at that. id like to believe that they have D's blessing for something like this

i understand where you're coming from though cuz i feel the same way about Berserk after Miura died.

Black Messiah was released before he was ready. The label forced it to come out because he wouldn't stop tinkering with it.

His discography perfect, want it to stay that way

Not mad about getting new music from someone like him though 🤷🏾‍♂️

  • Nov 11, 2025

If this actually drops (and I’m not convinced it will) I will definitely shed some tears on first listen

    This true also tho
Unless he stated he wanted material put out in case of passing

Of course they did. Quest and him were actually friends.

  • Nov 11, 2025

Keep it if he didnt finish it before passing, or if he didnt give the OK

  • Nov 11, 2025

it’s only gonna be right if he got to mixing and mastering stage

anything below that i’m not even entertaining tbh

To be honest I’m not sure that I want this. I hear the points made ITT and I do think Quest is the best possible person to do it, but it’s still Quest’s interpretation of D’Angelo’s vision.

I’m unfortunately reminded of SOPHIE’s posthumous album. Despite being in her brother’s hands and working with the same engineers to deliver something as close as possible to her vision at the time that she passed down to the tracklist, it just doesn’t feel like a SOPHIE album. She was too much of a perfectionist and the tracks that made it on the record were clearly, painfully not up to her standard and hadn’t yet been released for a reason.

As much as it hurts, I’m starting to believe that we need to let these projects remain tragic what ifs. For every Mac or SOPHIE with an estate and team with only the best intentions, we have a dozen examples of Pop Smoke, Juice, XXX, Lil Peep, Amy Winehouse, even Michael…
