20 YEARS LATER, HOW DOES IT FEEL?Voodoo was the first great musical endeavor of the young millennium. Released on Jan. 25, 2000, the second album by D'Angelo is hailed as a high point of the neo-soul era.Voodoo can’t lay claim to any one era. Produced in the 90s, and assembling sounds and ideas from 60s, 70s and 80s funk and soul, it represented a coalescence of every great black innovator of the past – Jimi Hendrix, Curtis Mayfield, George Clinton, Sly Stone, Stevie Wonder, Al Green, and Prince – and produced something hypnotic that was built to last. The hypnotic vibe extended beyond Voodoo’s instrumentation. D’Angelo’s writing was more nuanced here than it was on Brown Sugar. On Voodoo, he broached more spiritual, deeper concerns.

Brown Sugar is cool but Voodoo has more iconic songs for me, and muchhhh more replay value. The songs definitely add up to create something greater than the sum of its parts uniquely on Voodoo. It is without a doubt a masterwork whereas Brown Sugar is just a great album. my opinion

I prefer brown sugar but acknowledge that voodoo is the better album. Brown sugar is just an easier/more enjoyable listen but the musicality on Voodoo is next level.

Kinda like Channel Orange vs. Blonde

I think Black Messiah is a better album cohesively. Unpopular opinion. Voodoo is amazing but the praise that people give it tends to overshadow the other albums. People need to appreciate D’Angelo’s full body of work, not just Voodoo.

Black Messiah definitely gets its due but Brown Sugar is criminally under-appreciated. I guess it was a little too conventional?

White folks/critics don't seem to consider it in the same league as Voodoo but growing up I’ve had plenty of debates about Brown Sugar and Voodoo. Voodoo didn’t become his consensus best album until very recently.

I’ve actually seen BS praised more than BM, especially around the time BM was released. I think it was due to nostalgia and the feeling that people had with that and Voodoo. I love all 3 of his albums and feel that they all show different sides of his artistry. People so badly want him to recreate Voodoo, but I’m glad he went against that. He even said he didn’t want to repeat himself. And I love that he didn’t do what the majority wants him to do. I can respect the Voodoo love, but is that all people have for D’Angelo? What about Brown Sugar and Black Messiah. I wanna see appreciation think pieces and posts for those two also, especially the latter since people seemed to move on quickly from it compared to the previous two.

  • Discovered this very late in 2017. Haven’t looked back. Definitely one of the greatest records ever.
