Nah you can make that s*** fly but it's these somber ass piano/mellow type s***s. I think Stormzy last album had this very same tone. It's just too dour. Even the bops are depressing lmao

it’s a dave solo album so it’s not gonna be super happy and dancey but it’s cool music just high level raps, songwriting, and lyrics
Doesnt have the magic of his previous albums unfortunately. But some great tracks still
felt like he tried to do something on every song with this all his other albums had a couple bangers at least
I talk bout the money on all my accounts, so why don't I speak on the West Bank?
Remember growin' up prejudice, the damage 7-7 did
Extremist and terrorist, I was afraid of the Taliban
Can't speak out on illegal settlers, now I'm afraid of a shadow-ban
Hes really saying nothing here though
Hes not speaking about illegal settlers bc he used to be afraid of the taliban and now hes afraid of a shadowban?
What?
I wanna spin this but is it gonna ruin my Friday night with all the depression
serious question
It's really upbeat, the lyrical content will beat you up
Not really related but the final verse on Sprinter is one of the best verses of this decade

Long post but, he starts the song with the question
"What would I do in a next generation?"
But to answer that he goes back to historical fights against oppression and tries to put himself in perspective of the older generation and what he would of done if he was there
In 1940, if I was enlisted to fight for the nation
Or in 1960, if I had to fight for the rights of my people
And laid down my life on the line so my grandkids could live a life that's peaceful
Would I be on that? Would I be frontline?
Then he comes back to the same question and realizes that theres no point of that question because he's he's currently living in similar times and still not doing enough
sometimes wonder, "What would I do in a next generation?"
But I'm knowin' the answer, 'cause what am I doin' in this generation?
And he uses Palestine as an example of a fight against oppression where he and others arent doing enough and how that stems from islamophobic propaganda that frames Palestine and Hamas as terrorists and a fear of retaliation from Zionists. Basically highlighting that he and his generation are p**** compared to the previous ones and their fights
What am I willin' to die for? What am I doin' in this generation?
I get in my head sometimes, I feel like I'm in despair
That feelin' of total powerlessness, I get that sinkin' feelin'
That good ain't defeatin' evil
I put that pain on vinyl, but feel like that s*** ain't movin' the needle
Retweetin' people, raisin' awareness, in all fairness
Ain't gonna bring Chris back to his parents
only rapper to name drop Lumumba,, Battle of Karbala and zio-rats occupation of Palestine in the same track
Raindance, Selfish, Title track and Marvellous are my highlights on the album. Fairchild is a very powerful song. Imo a bit more variety sonically would've helped this project overall. Just because a song is addressing deeper topics, doesn't mean the beat has to be empty and somber all the time. However its been a while since I have seen a mainstream rapper been this political in an album and I appreciate this. Raps are great as always as well.
Off the first listen, this was heavy and lacked the versatility of his past releases.
There were some crazy moments like Chapter 16 (RapSOTY) and the title track, but the track sequencing kept it this way too intense without moments of reliefs. Marvellous, following the end of my 27th Birthday, I was fatigued. Also, its time to admit JB needs to stop being tapped in for these type of tracks. It worked somewhat in the 10s and even on Both Sides of A Smile, but he hasn't evolved when its come to rap production / features.
I know Dave got a lot to say and he showed why he's top 3 of this generation with the pen, but he needs a proper A&R to help package his messages in a more digestible way.
What do you call this kind of sound cus it's not for me lol
He don't drop like that so when he drops he wants it to be meaningful music
