He was flying so close to the sun with an obvious murder / gore fetish that intoxicated him so it didn't take much to get him to act it out.
Once she started mentioning that she could tell on him in any capacity, he flirted with the idea of killing her, and in a way satisfying his fetish. She probably 'pushed him over the edge' during some argument and he made the decision to do it right before he went on tour so that he was out of dodge if her body was ever discovered.
