on one hand i agree but i guess part of the appeal of DG generally has been their ability to tap into weird and new sounds. i wouldnt want them to just do a JD retread but definitely would want something less knowingly meta than yots
I'm not really against experimentation or anything, and I even liked a lot of songs on YOTS, i just feel like half of YOTS was them being like "this is what the internet thinks we are so here's your death grips album dumbasses". i especially felt this with streaky, flies, etc. and then literally capping it off with "Disappointed". i dont think it was low effort or anything, to me it seemed like a very meticulous effort of commening on their image and presence in a meta way. which in a vacuum is cool but i'd just enjoy more serious experimentation I guess? idk if that makes sense

That type of meta commentary felt very ā2018ā/ārunning out of ideasā and hasnāt aged the album all that well even tho thereās some nice tracks on there
Now that almost 4 years has passed I think theyāve got some fresh s*** to drop
past their prime lmao who honestly is excited
nah i'll actually explain this
so I kinda feel like post-2016, the idea of death grips has kinda slowly and slowly became a sort of self parody of what people had conceived of them and not necessarily for the better.
you had bottomless pit, a pretty sonically tame and focused record in comparison to jenny death. and while I said I enjoyed it at the time, it just isn't something I come back to as someone who ISN'T as invested in the band as I once was.
the real parody thing is clear with year of the snitch which IMO is a super super flawed record for a plethora of reasons. my main one though is that ride suuuucked on here. he always has been a very striking lyricist and that was super super clear from the beginning. comparing the lyrics from exmilitary to the stuff on tptb, it's definitely become more filled with cryptic s*** but it wasn't nonsense like what it is on yots.
that album REALLY made it sound like those guys weren't even invested in what they were making and it's the only record from them that I don't like at all.
also to whoever replied to me saying that "the money store isn't even ten yet !!", I think ten years nowadays is a long time and for a band who experienced the cycle so quickly like death grips has it's not surprising if the creative well has run dry
I hope they prove me wrong though !! but i'm not really banking on it

!!!! this is exactly what I meant
they just became a parody of themselves and it was dogshit

i like Black Paint, Hahaha, S***show, and Dilemma a lot. but yeah for sure the album hasnt aged super well comparative to their other work. still excited to see what they put out
Ride's vocal cords deservedely needed a lot of time to recover after dropping an album per year and touring lol

Yeah I agree with you completely. v contrived knowing weirdness in places and it was kinda grating to listen through
i grew out of their music cause this s*** was all i listened to in my manic angsty teen phase, but they will always have a place in my heart lol

hey death grips fam
dg show in 2016 was the best concert iāve probably ever been to
at the height of my obsession and they killed it, nonstop energy for an hour and a half. skipped my freshman homecoming for it. went with my dad

Kinda worried about this happening to me cus I associate them so much with a period in my life but Iām excited regardless, been meaning to give their discog a relisten

my homeboy put me onto em my freshman year when I still some had of that HS youth in me...and they were in my top 5 listens...but then year of the snitch came out that summer
had no desire to listen to anything other than streaky
they're like odd future for me. you can show me new odd future era stuff, even from the artists I loved from that group, and it just wont mean half as much

Such a bizarre comparison for so many reasons

well it's not a comparison, it's just me relating to the feeling originally expressed with another artist
