    You're right.
If anything it will lead to an even stronger political polarization of society in my opinion, because it's not only one interest group that can take advantage of this technology.

Exactly. If anything, “deep fake!” will be the equivalent to “fake news!” and will push us further into a post-truth reality where people grow more cynical of others and more loyal to whatever group they connect with.

  • Feb 9, 2020

I agree OP it will be probably be a problem when factoring in how little actual research people put into s*** they believe

Edit : just realized this a cookie thread. I hope this doesn’t count as stalking you.

    Filter algorithms and bubbles hooray!
The only thing that we can do to lessen the divide is to teach the upcoming generations about the mechanisms, so that they're aware of them. It wont change how things are run by social media companies and search engine providers, but at least they will be sensibilized and be able to a***yze information more critically.

I think they already made a way to detect deep fakes so honestly this shouldn’t be a big problem . Whenever this “deepfakes” gets big your phone will prob be able to detect it.

    Who is "they" you're mentioning?
So far I haven't encountered a single advertisment for a Deepfake alert app and neither have I heard about an OS that plans to install such an application by default. I'd be very interested in any articles mentioning such an endeavour, if you have any.

Its not illegal because people lie all the time without getting fried for it. It’s a matter of being caught for it which is a lot harder in this case.

  • Feb 9, 2020
    Ooo

Why isn’t this illegal? Like any type of production of it? Because the government is allowing it to happen and will allow it to happen until it’s a well known thing. It will get better and better until the line begins to blur and you can’t believe anything you see in the internet without undeniable proof. The public will get hold of using it. Which will cause some tragedies to happen to everyday people. After they will ban it and heavily fine/jail time for it. This will lead to even more manipulation and more people in the dark about everyday matters. Leading to more restrictions and bans on internet matters, which will thus bring this country closer to facism.

I think they were trying to make it illegal, but I really think it's scary too.

On the plus side, it renders video evidence of any alleged crimes useless because of how easily s*** could be faked

How is this a good thing

  • Feb 9, 2020
    NiceLikeChrist

You can just look at the video file and know exactly what’s been done to it

Deepfakes aren’t gonna get anyone know any real trouble

This is true but it might not work 100% of the time and there will always be conspiracy theorist who still believe whatever they want

I saw the one with Jim Carrey in The Shining and its unbelievable how well it works. A friend sent it to me and was convinced they were remaking The Shining, I had to explain the concept to him. It’s a terrifying thing, and I could see it becoming a tool easily wielded by bad actors throughout politics and governments and so on.

at first i was trynna dissect it like looking at where i assumed they stitched the images together, and obviously there's a very limited depth of field in order to draw focus away from those artifacts

but then i just sat back for a second and took it in and realized that if i wasn't intentionally staring at spots of the screen i probably wouldn't ever guess anything was different, espc cus i haven't seen the shining irl before
