I wanna see this again today. This is insane.
love that it is on HBO max. prob will spin it again this weekend
Somewhat disappointing movie (think pacing was the main flaw for me) but a great theater experience nonetheless
Just because there were some prior posts regarding wether or not this is a “white savior” movie
I haven’t read the book, but based on the movie I feel compelled to compare it to Heart of Darkness. I do so because Conrad’s novel is very critical of colonialism, in the same way that this movie is (minimally) critical of savior tropes. I don’t think the fact that the movie is critical of this relationship excuses it from possible critique
Because it’s still possible to be critical of something that you are taking part in. For example, the same representative power relations are being used to structure who gets depth of characterization. It seems to me that the Fremon have much more symbolic function than actual character, at least based on this movie. They are a mirror for Paul to discover a more wholistic image of himself, and this is fundamental to savior narratives
Maybe this will be disrupted in a future movie, but I can only speak on this one. Also, worth noting the above is not why I found the movie disappointing. I just had a lot to write write bc it’s an interesting discussion to be had. My thoughts aren’t even totally settled there, and the movie is just more motivation to potentially read the book at some point

i felt that a movie like this requires the pacing that was used here
I was gonna watch Dune on HBO Max on my iPhone 6s with the cracked screen today…. But you know what, that would be supporting the movie
Gonna illegal stream it instead
I watched and to be fair I think his response is just playing off of what I was saying in the post. I can acknowledge that the movie/IP criticizes the trope. I’m just saying that it still takes part in the tradition nonetheless. My emphasis is based on characterization and who/how individuals gain narrative importance. The fremon seem important as an idea, but most of the individuals are unimportant, at least in this film - in comparison to Paul and his relationship to his mother, as well as his family/house as a whole getting depth and dedicated time. One could say that it’s unfair to critique the perspective from which a story is told, but that’s part of the main focus when considering what’s a “white savior” narrative

I’m not sure that’s true, but I do acknowledge that they made something to support an eventual franchise, which definitely impacts the pacing. There are other franchise starters that don’t have the same issues imo, but it might not be necessary to bring up
Bout to see it right now

I think you actually had your card declined when you went to sign up for HBO so now you’re out of options

There isn't much about the Fremen YET. The story thats being told only just started.
If its more of a critique of a white savior story then I would say it makes sense to be told from the alleged savior's perspective.

Jokes on you, I use my homie’s HBO Max account
Watching this on my Apple Watch. Since the screen is a square it's pretty much like IMAX ratio

Are the fremen not white folk? does Paul really save them? :mystery:

Don't forget that he movie has to follow the story of the book. There is so much world-building in the book that it is impossible to make a single 2.5 hour movie that is paced "well" (as in being a traditional beginning middle ending format) without rewriting parts of the book. It is unfortunate but the last thing we want is another Lynch Dune where the movie suffers because they wanted the whole book in one film
