    Dune > Lord of the Rings just because it avoids the good vs evil trope and shows how politics/religion/environmental problems aren’t black and white.

    Fair but was it already a trope before LOTR also it was written during the time of fascism vs the world so it was kinda relevant. Dune came out during the cold war and reflected the more complex nature of man at the time.

    Not that I’m saying Lord of the Rings is bad I just enjoy the complexity of Dune personally

    yeah I just finished Children Of Dune and it definitely makes LOTR look like Sesame Street in its themes etc. I'd say Tolkien had a more expressively descriptive way of writing his characters, settings and situations but he doesnt get nearly as cerebral.

    Captain Nemo is the only other fictional character I can think of that was written as epically as Aragorn and Gandalf
