It's not his niche though. Pines has like what two heists in the first third of the movie? It's not a heist film.
On monetary success, Blue Valentine was made for 1m and made almost 17m. Oscar nomination for Michelle Williams.
Pines 15m budget, 47m made. Not really a valid point.
Go watch the trailer and tell me how they sold it to people lol
Pines made that much at the box office and was a hit when movies still made money physically. Also was on premium cable for years. It's a well known movie. Blue Valentine is not.

That's not a significant amount of money for a film to make. I wouldn't say either are really all that well known movies. Not sure why you're arguing this so steadfastly.

I just made an observation. You're the one arguing and being quite the pedant.
The Place Beyond the Pines is Cianfrance's big hit, it made great money relative to its budget, and it had a long life on premium cable. This film has a related premise. He's going back to his roots.

Don't reduce yourself down to an observation now - you stated it was his only hit and you stated Blue Valentine didn't make a lot of money. Both based on what is objectively incorrect information.
If Pines 3x'd it's budget it just about squeezed over the breakeven point. If Blue Valentine 17x'd its budget it made actual tangible profit. Couple that with the critical acclaim it received = it was the bigger success.

Pine made more than double theatrically and then probably double again on Blu Ray and cable.
Blue Valentine had a high multiplier because Ryan Gosling clearly got paid nothing on it. He probably worked for scale.
And we both know this. You're just being obnoxious!

No you're just arguing for the sake of arguing with s*** points.

In an article in The Hollywood Reporter, Cianfrance said that he had given up his entire director's fee to help fund the film: "I mean, it came down to we were exactly my fee short. They paid me and I just paid it back. So I still have to pay taxes on it, you know. So I actually had to pay to make the movie."
lol, that'll certainly help your multiplier. barely funding a million dollar movie
Lol the industry were like nah Derek you better give us some Safdie s***. Place Beyond d the Pines your only hit brother
How do we know this is some Safdie s***? Lol he's already tackled "robbery" plots, like in the film you mentioned
