I heard people complaining about mixing on MBDTF, then on TLOP it was clearly bad and Kanye fixed it, now there clearly is/was something wrong with Jesus is King. Some people say that album may sound too loud, dry or like it was recorded in some cheap enviroment, as Kanye actually envisioned it to sound that way, but at the same time I haven't heard people critiquing mixes of CD LR GRAD and 808.

Outside of Jesus Is King, it has been more mastering issues than mixing. Mike Dean got mad at how Vlado Meller mastered MBDTF but I honestly think it sounds fine outside of a couple moments where the clipping is jarring. After Mike took over, the engineering was still fine to me until Mike started both mixing AND mastering. That's a combination that will lead to a significant amplification of errors. The worst part is that he mixes and masters at the same time so he doesn't even give himself time for the mix to sit so he can relisten with fresh ears. I can't blame him entirely because Kanye delays and reworks things until the last minute so Mike doesn't have time to work, but Drake's mastering engineer Chris Athens has been able to finish projects in under 24 hours.

I find nothing wrong with the mixing or the mastering at all in Jesus is king

At the same time I don’t mind when TLOP got updated

  • some moments on ye/jik sound kinda intentional, stylistic choices like the way pusha sits in the mix but i think his recent albums are just so rushed out & his pre mbtf stuff probably had 10x the hours spent into making them

mbdtf sounded kinda tacky in places with the clipping everything before that pretty immaculate

College Dropout got re-released with a new mix it I recall correctly

  • its definitely on trend in music rn to be experimenting with """"lo fi""" recording & mixing techniques, i think the hurricane snippet was an interesting take on that. altho ye blurs the line between creatively brilliant, finding pure expression & being lazy as s*** as well as anyone lol

The white cover is the one with the new mix. The original brown cover is the one with the OG mix

It's mostly mastering problems, they clipped so much, it is a botched release, that's not a secret.

Album as a whole has crazy potential

it’s literally the main problem with the album next to the corny lines.

every album after mbdtf sounds way better (mix wise). i dont care about little clips or some grainy vocals but mbdtf just suffer significantly that it takes away from the music on a decent pair of headphones or speaker. theres no impact and its hard to pick out all the separate sounds. i dont know techniques on how it should done but it makes sense that an album that has very busy/maximalist production its harder to get it right while sparse songs are more forgiving in a way. but its def possible see: every radiohead album.
