Please provide an example of a “punch in” when recording a verse

I have never heard this term used in this way. When I think “punch in” I think the person didn’t care enough about the project & just completed their part on a whim. Please enlighten me

Punch in means that the artist records a a line, punches out, records another line, and so on until the verse/song is done
