Take Care opened up every single door drake could have ever wanted. He toured it for roughly 6 months, raking in about 42 mil at the box office. It went over 6 times platinum and spawned 4 top 20 Billboard 100 hits. The record was critically acclaimed as well as beloved by fans, pushing 631,000 first week, elevating him from promising up & comer to veritable superstar, almost instantaneously.
But what if I told you that this cornerstone of Drizzy’s legacy was not as bulletproof as it seemed? This brings me 2 the titular question, the very same that inspired this discussion: did Drake make Take Care, or did Take Care make Drake? It’s a chicken-or-egg thing for sure, but an interesting question nonetheless: Was Drizzy going to be as successful as he was with or without Take Care? It’s a question that speaks to a lot of artists’ greatness and whether or not cream is going to rise to the top regardless.
The album (among those of a certain age, of which I am not) is spoken of with the sort of whispery reverence usually reserved 4 your parents “real music” archive. Marvin’s Room is often reflected on as a spiritual experience, recounting the first time you heard it, a rite of passage. Singles like HYFR & Headlines are considered 2 be some of, if not the strongest in Drake’s catalog.
Even beyond the musical qualities of the record, the main appeal seems 2 be that this was the first record where drake appeared 2 arrive as a fully formed package. Gone was the (relatively) clean shaven wannabe who, although some may disagree, basically functioned as a more marketable (read: light skinned) childish gambino. He grew out his hair, stopped shaving (as much) n began tapping into the sort of proto tumblr performative depression that has since become the standard by which all others are measured .
But again I ask: Did Drake Make Take Care, Or Did Take Care Make Drake?
I leave it 4 you 2 decide.
End of Transmission
Drake made Take Care, he was on his superstar trajectory regardless of what he put out. Of course he couldn’t of dropped whack s***, however Drake already put in the work to be in that position. All he had to do was deliver.
Real eyes realize real lies
cmon I expected you of all ppl 2 have an interesting perspective

Ur title is funny tho
I mean theres not really much to say. But i agree Take Care made him "serious" .
Imo n from my experience (i was also in HS at the time, class of 2014 so i was there during the start n peak of the "big 3"), Drake was kinda a novelty with his debut, became serious with Take Care & became who he is today with NWTS & IYRTITL.
During TML he was kinda Raps whipping boy n used to get clowned on by other Rappers n media, n with Take Care is where the "Drake the type of nigga" memes started to pop up on FB n early Twitter. Many people still disparaged him for the singing during TC, but he also gained huge support as well.
Take Care is a classic tho & an important release, Drake as a character was still looked at mostly as "soft" & "cute" tho during it. And even some people that loved TC would still have side remarks of Drake as a person/persona.
It was def the turning gears tho, which NWTS & IYRTITL ran with & completely changed. Turning him into the phenom & "deity" he is now. So Far Gone got immensely even more popular during NWTS era too.
I don’t understand the question. That’s like saying if Kanye never made College Dropout, Late Registration and Graduation would he still have been a star?

not at all the same, I think a more accurate comparison would be Twisted Fantasy
It’s more so about the idea of mythmaking as it relates to these cultural touchstone sort of records

If Drake woulda dropped 2 lackluster albums in a row it wouldnt have been a great look but he was on his way to being who he was anyways
It just amplified it that he dropped a masterpiece
I mean if you were there to witness the TML era as it happened, there was no stopping Drake from being the biggest superstar in the world

Right like what if lil Wayne never dropped any music would he still be a famous musical artist

"began tapping into the sort of proto tumblr performative depression that has since become the standard by which all others are measured"
Well yeah, that was exactly The Weeknds wave back then.
