Ok so the only theory that makes sense to me is that she is in fact dead and the kidnappers didn't realize she would die so quickly so now they're trying to either recoup some money or trying to get rid of the body and lay low from the situation

This sounds crazy but maybe they were dumb enough to think kidnapping the mom of a national reporter wouldn’t become a national story with the FBI getting involved

They most def are stupid people. I think they assumed it was someone rich but not famous. The fact they're reluctant to even communicate shows this was not planned out thoroughly.
