I’ve been working in the mental health field for about two years, and a few months ago I was assigned a new supervisor who decided I wasn’t “assertive” enough with patients and repeatedly stated that I wasn’t “man enough” for this role. From the beginning, she nitpicked everything I did and openly questioned my suitability for the field, despite my strong performance and positive feedback. She ultimately issued me a final written warning, the most severe form of discipline, for allegedly documenting suicide risk incorrectly after a patient sang a King Von song and clearly stated it was a song. Even though my documentation reflected that clarification and I had never received any prior coaching or write-ups in my career, she exaggerated the situation, treated it as suicidal ideation, and used it to justify extreme disciplinary action against me.

The situation escalated further when she instructed me to participate in ethically concerning practices, including getting into a pool with patients, visiting minor clients without their parents’ knowledge, and completing clinical documentation while I was on medically documented leave. During group supervision, she also distributed inappropriate worksheets asking staff to guess which employee watched X-rated movies, which was unrelated to clinical work and crossed professional boundaries. I reported these concerns to HR and company leadership, and nothing was done; during one HR meeting, she said, “I thought this was personal between us,” like wtf. No corrective action followed. Over time, it became clear the company had changed and chose to allow this supervisor to target and undermine me rather than step in to defend or support me.

My caseload was then restricted to a single patient after she directed the company not to assign me additional patients based on her personal bias, despite being consistently ahead on documentation and receiving outstanding feedback. I was selected as Best New Hire of 2025, yet my reputation was undermined. Last week I told them I was quitting and the company asked for a meeting.

The company owner also told me that if I were a family member and so unhappy, he would advise me to quit. He then said nothing would be done and my reports were essentially a waste of time. so I took this as a soft request and quit last week.

Now I’m like wtf why was I targeted like this?

I actually reported her first bothering me during medical leave and the state singed an investigator ironically enough. Hope she gets fired or at least suspended.

Frankly, OP, some folks are just so miserable with their own lives they’ll find any reason to tear you down. It’s not fair, but it’s life. Why did they do it? Could’ve been anything: they were threatened by your hard work ethic, they felt “less than” around you, they didn’t like the way you looked, their personal life is so s*** they now have to try to ruin other people’s lives in an attempt to fill the black hole they are in.

Glad you got out of the situation, don’t blame yourself, all the s*** you mentioned in OP was truly outside of your control.

I really appreciate that… I think part of it was because I brought a new vehicle and I remember them saying how nice it looked (just an average bmw) and I didn’t think much about it. Then I also graduated from a great university, but I didn’t flaunt it or try to act different/better than anyone. so I think it was a mix of things they didn’t like.

Some people create issues to fill a void but it’s only a temporary fix. Eventually they’ll meet their match and karma will hit them back.

For my job I meet patients at their homes or at the office and I have never had a client or parent tell me I wasn’t assertive or man enough.m to help them or the kids.

This supervisor was literally using her own bias for what a man should be like to attack me. She even said I didn’t have a “clinical mind.”
