question: how would y'all feel if MBDTF was deleted and Ye released a new version with things added and removed?

sure, he can do what he wants, but how do you as fans feel?

  • May 13, 2024

Its whack if they take the other version(s) away

I dont mind if they release a new version(s) separately tho or if they tack on songs later on in the end (a tracklist restructured is whack too, but i dont mind added songs at the end like deluxe albums)

    So im 50/50 on it

Although changing an album after its debut year is really weird, but again as long as the other versions exist and as accessible i dont mind

Little changes tho i dont think its a big deal to replace the whole thing, but big changes should be a seperate "release"

Kinda like Taylor Swift with the rerecorded albums even tho i dont care about Taylor Swift

But youtube and fileshare sites will "always" be there if the artist(s) do f*** it up or take away accessibility for whatever reason

And imo it might encourage piracy if they do completely take the older ones

Like what happens in video games

    Like how people did/do to TLOP, Donda1, Donda2 & Frank's Endless

Kinda like how when remastered, live play & greatest hits albums exist along side the ogs it should be treated the same for major changes

Thats all my thoughts on it

  • May 13, 2024

as long as the original is accessible I don't think it's that big of a deal, but I really don't like the idea that works are allowed to be retouched forever

  • May 13, 2024

    Stop streaming then

    Everyone.

The only thing this really compares to imo is Pablo, where the album was intentionally released unfinished and then fixed over time

Except this is more jarring bc it is 4 years later

Seriously bruh, Are you really so lazy you can't spare a minute to read the OP? Why even bother being in the thread if you can't even bother to read? Just go back to watching TikTok vids smh. And yeah, I'm with the OP on this one.

given how much every fanbase begs for their fav artist to put their mixtapes/early work on streaming I don't think this is the case

for the avg person now if its not on streaming it doesnt exist

  • May 13, 2024

Not to be dismissive but this isn't the 80s.

The fact that albums are available digitally and Donald's core fanbase is so exceedingly online makes this a non-issue tbh

You could download the OG album in a shorter time than it took me to write this post

maybe rebrand is the wrong word. "repackaging" is slightly better?

anyway, i get it and maybe why he released it in 2020 (i don't buy the we're all going to die tbh. probably wanted to capitalize on how we were all inside during that time).

i'm just not in the camp of releasing something, deleting it, and replacing it with an idealized version.

nothing wrong with what he did, but i don't want to see this as a trend.

i respect your thoughts nonetheless man 🤝

Personally I don't think Donald Glover of all people is someone who would care to capitalize on an album, seeing as how the biggest album he ever released, Awaken My Love, didn't receive any additional promotion after its release. Redbone became his biggest song ever and he didn't even put out any videos for it or any of the other big/popular songs on the album.

He didn't even go on tour until two years after the release of AML, and that was for what was originally planned to be Atavista/This is America. Funnily enough, he ultimately didn't even end up dropping the album when he had all the proper build up for it (Pharos, TIA tour, Guava Island, etc the unfinished version of the album. He just dropped an unfinished version of it two years after the fact with little to no build up, named it 3.15.20, didn't give the album any track titles, and called it a day

Piracy is priced in w Gambino's fanbase the same way the user above said corny gimmicks are priced in

People who liked this album a lot have probably been listening to alt versions of Human Sacrifice & Algorhythm for years atp

I agree, I don’t mind adding a new version but the original version should always remain available

  • I ain’t heard Puerto Rican parade day floating since 2016

  • May 14, 2024

I don’t mind artist wanting to repackage their music, revisit old albums, or add new ideas to old stuff. I don’t agree with erasing the originally released material though. Whether it’s a label decision or an artist decision, I don’t agree with it.

NOW AS AN ARTIST DEFENDER, fans demanding anything out of an artist that isn’t actually paying for anything is crazy to me. You weren’t planning to buy the OG album or the updated version but the entitlement in it is crazy to me.

Fans demanding something pre-streaming era might’ve made sense but today? Fans need to PAY UP.

I'd say this is much less jarring. They both had reasons for what they did. Ye wanted to try a whole new, everchanging way of albummaking. From what I understand Gambino got 3.15.20 out the way he did because of COVID. He was probably, in his eyes, forced. So this is just him completing his vision, once and for all. I can respect that.

this reminds me of Lykke Li saying she was debating wiping all of her music a few days ago. Y'all better download it somewhere before she puts words to action

Even so, just don't delete the original concept off of streaming services. And why put it out if you weren't ready (regardless of the pandemic)? It's not like someone leaked the whole album months in advance.

“Why put it out if you weren’t ready”

He said it’s because he thought the world was ending
