I just watched a tiktok of a guy saying he believes America has 4-5 castes
1. The Investor Class
2. Salaried Workers
3. Part Time Workers
4. Undocumented Workers
I don’t know if I necessarily agree with the “castes” he believes in but it’s an interesting thought. Keep in mind that the US has a lower economic mobility rating than India right now.
idek if that terminology really applies
I get why people go for that cause it sounds cool
also i ain't vibin wit starting the sentence about politics with "I just watch a tiktok of a guy saying ___" lmao
this is an insult to people who are actually victims living in a caste system with no (I mean literally 0%) chance of upwards mobility or emancipation from their situation
This is ridiculous LMAO. Just read Marx don't come up with some other weird bullshit terminology

there's a difference between caste & class, there is a sharp division along class lines economically; however "castes" are separate from economic class (and only complemented by such) and are purely social

this
The U.S. does have a caste system and it's based on race/ethnicity.
damn u bumped like hell
I already been in this old ass thread thought s*** was new

I was scrolling for interesting threads and this is something never discussed basically lmao
US i'd say is divided by economic standing and then by race/sex/gender/disability or other categories are discriminated against further but (socioeconomically i could have just said)
I wouldn't call it a caste system because that's like religion and what family is marrying who and all that so its kinda not as relevant a term
Class system? yeah. I'd say we have a particularly peculiar class system which people don't address

Words mean things. Class ≠ Caste

I remember he made that comparison but it’s based on different things
Good a***ogy but as far as specific terminology caste system doesn’t apply as much
That being said Dr. King was heavy on advocating for better economic equality + opportunities and that’s around the time he got murdered
Anytime those leaders begin to f*** somebody’s money up it seems like they go

India is not the only example of a caste system.
The U.S. Is divided by ethnicity over class too. Lol I didn't even realize this was a controversial statement.
Like yes there a class system... There's a class system plenty of places is there not?
There's also another system here and has been for centuries. If specifically calling it a caste system is bothering people then it is a caste-like system at worst.
There are ethnicities and panethnicities that could also be described as a buffer caste here...
And to no shock at all, a book was just released discussing this lol: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caste:_The_Origins_of_Our_Discontents

doesn't really bother me I was just hesitant to label it a caste system but parallels can def be drawn

Not attacking you or anything, I just didn't realize people would say the OP is talking nonsense or something.
I think perhaps caste-like MIGHT be more appropriate for current United States, because there's several ways the U.S. does resemble a caste system. I think it was absolutely completely accurate back in the day, and as that link posted it seems Indians affected by the system viewed Black Americans as such as well.
