For example “After Hours” by The Weeknd.

Was released in Feb 2020, about a month before the album dropped alongside album cover, release date, etc

But a lot of fans don’t consider it a “single” bc it wasnt sent to radio

    It’s a promotional single then

Not a proper single, just a lil song to promote the album

I was going to say that process of hits getting “sent to radio” even after the album drops is seeming more and more archaic but realized that the modern equivalent is the way hits get playlisted and algo boosted

Depends on how pedantic you want to get. Songs are literally labeled "singles" on streaming services these days, making the debate really simple. On the other hand, it seems kind of weird to not consider hit songs that receive music videos singles, which happens a lot tbh. To me, Rich Baby Daddy is a single because it was promoted in some capacity.

Album cuts that organically rise up the charts without any promo are absolutely not singles.

I would still call something like "No Role Modelz" a single. Weird to think of Cole's biggest hit as a non single. (no music video or anything but known to be his biggest hit)

It literally is a single though.

"The album's third single, "No Role Modelz", was sent to urban and rhythmic radio stations on August 4, 2015."

Lead single vs Promo single vs “just single”

    Lead: pre-release
    Promo: stand-alone, no album
    Single: anything sent to radio

mostly this, but “Lead” just means the first-released single

if two songs from the album drop before the album, they’re not both lead singles

likewise, lead singles can be released after the album’s release if all pre-release singles were just promo singles

"On February 18, 2020, the Weeknd announced the release of the album's title track with the reveal of the album's cover art. The promotional single reached the top 20 of various countries worldwide, including the United States, where it peaked at number 20 on the Billboard Hot 100."
