Little backstory: Eritrea, this country in NE Africa that I have family from speaks a language called Tigrinya. I’m thinking about becoming fluent in Tigrinya. Do you think Stanford will care if I do? I’m really trying to work on extra-curricular activities because I already have more than good enough grades to get in. So anyone who would have any idea, lmk below.
Learning another language is always beneficial, you don't need to justify learning it for college admissions
There's no point learning tgrilla or whatever that north African bullshit is unles ur tryna get a career highjacking fishing boats or trafficking children op

I mean if it’s strictly for college ya his time is better spent elsewhere. But damn let the man enrich himself through his culture if he wants

that's one of the biggest things they care about is language fluency
Even if it doesn’t further your career you should absolutely 100% learn it. I need to learn my own language, Igbo so that I can teach it to my kids. It hurts going back home and not understanding a lot of what my own people are saying.
They care about languages but only the important ones. English, Spanish, Mandarin. Anything else you just get a "good for you" sticker.
Personally I wouldn't waste time becoming fluent in tigrinya but if it's important to you and you feel like you'll be in a position to use that skill in the future then do your thing.

mad cause he only speaks English
what's up with the weirdos itt saying that it's useless to pursue a lesser known language? I bet you the people saying that aren't even fluent in anything more than English.
op, learning languages doesnt have to be about how ""useful"" the language is. if tigrinya means something to you, you should study it regardless. colleges will love to hear about your journey in becoming fluent in it, and it teaches you discipline in studying.
