I’ve noticed a trend in hip hop and music in general that songs seem to keep getting shorter and shorter.
I was listening to Codeine Crazy earlier, and when I went to change songs, I noticed that CC is over 5 minutes long! I feel like if it was made today, it would be shorter.
Is this because artists are adapting to our culture’s lowering attention span? And more importantly, is it a good thing?
I personally prefer shorter songs, however, if it is a song like Codeine Crazy, where the longer length can be justified by multiple sections and a lot to say, I would rather the song be all it could be than it be cut down to be shorter. Basically I prefer short songs generally, but some songs need to be long, and in those cases I would rather they be long,

I love the opus type songs like the ones on futuresex/lovesounds and the weeknd trilogy tapes etc but otherwise yea shorter the better as long as it hits like 1:30 ish I'm cool

i mean it kinda depends but if we’re talking singles, somewhere in the middle. 3:30 seems like a perfect time - 3 hooks, 2 verses. something like that

don’t want it too short where i feel like i have to replay the song multiple times bc i’m not satisfied hearing it once (Poland)

but i also don’t want a super long 5min+ song that can become a chore to listen to multiple times

3-3:30 mins is the perfect length for a single.

i dont really have a preference tbh. as long as an artist can keep me engaged throughout the whole song, that's all that matters

The responses are similar to the vibe I felt and was anticipating.
I guess the hard part is determining when the length is justified or not, tho.
I make music myself and I can struggle to get a song under 4 to 5 minutes often.

Rap is not really meant to be long unless you Kendrick and u can pretty much make a whole arrangement of a lot of things happening at once instead of typical verse / hook / verse / hook / verse repetition

Runaway is like 9 minutes and I wouldn’t have it any other way

But a short song that doesn’t waste any time that’s just under 3 minutes can be amazing too
