  • I made this s***ty graph thing that I feel like helps explain why the tides turn on artists or celebrities or whoever when they get too famous. it's all about the balance between the quality of their work and the overall awareness of their brand

if the awareness is higher the quality, then people might flip on you

but I'm curious if YOU find YOURSELF liking anything less as it gets more popular. Do you feel like it's because it's not "yours" anymore, or is it because the quality gets watered down with popularity?

It depends if the artist sells out or something then they can get worse

but like the original material that I liked doesn't get worse just because more people like it

I think a lot of people just don't wanna be associated with some of the corny people that latch onto artists/songs once they blow up. That's more of like a kid/immature insecure thing to worry about though

Yeah it really is when the fandom grows to have an identity and you feel like you don't fit with that identity

  • I feel like artists start to make music for specific target groups after blowing up

Yeah that's what it is for a lot of people. It's childish imo though. Like really if you're over the age of 20 your identity shouldn't be so connected to liking a certain musician. If you let that effect your tastes it kinda makes you look shallow/like you're trying too hard

Let’s use 67 as an example.
It started off as a hard song that made good TikTok edits
Now it’s trickled down to grade schools you tell me if it’s still cool

  • ktt is the king of this mentality this is how most people act on here. d***riding something cus it's underground -> 180 opinion change when they blow up -> act like their stuff from before being famous is the only good s*** etc etc

  • Popularity doesnt matter to me. Tyler is at the height if his career and is doing amazing imo but Drake on the other hand is an artist I still love that is also massively popular but his new s*** isnt that good at all to me

  • depends who gets their hands on it

  • really it's because people listen to music through the lens of other people's perception and let fanbases/trends/gp dictate what they openly like at any point in time

Something doesn’t get less cool once it gets more popular it’s just when it gets co-opted by people who don’t like it genuinely if that’s the right way to say it.

Playboi Carti was always cool no matter how big he got but Brat became played out because everyone wanted to say something was Brat and Ken Carson kinda lost his luster when everyone on the internet was making AGC pics of any public figure

  • It completely depends on the type of subculture it’s cool to

  • It's not the diminished cool factor that I find irritating. It's seeing everyone develop takes and farm contrarian views at so late a date. There are new things I'm interested in that I put off to avoid the hype cycle. I don't want to be primed or influenced by that. Before or after the fact.

Something I like just becoming popular is great. I'm glad Kate Bush got a huge bump from Stranger Things. It didn't really come with any discourse. It just made new Kate Bush fans.

  • Of course, even the best song ever gets old and played out when it’s everywhere at all times, turns into a skip at that point

    Pokémon go to the polls

  • It always been like this from music to sports. Everyone loved Steph Curry then he started winning and isn't a cute underdog story. Now everyone is loving Steph Curry again cause he's getting old and isn't winning as much.

Takes maturity and resolve to have this mindset in 2026 tho

  • Havnt peeped the video yet but I think sometimes an artist or creative really sacrifices their artistic vision to appeal to a wider audience and that makes it less cool
