Very cute idea, but its just not happening in this day & age. It was happening in the 60s & 70s with Motown, and then again in the 90s with Ruthless,No Limit and Cash Money. Almost all those labels sold out to the highest bidder, besides Ruthless, which just became a shell of itself without Eazy.
Pretty sure theres many more black owned labels back then that folded. Its cool that Rap-A-Lot never really sold out like that and their imprint in the streets was felt heavily in the mid-late 2000s. Anyways, with streaming services being in and audio CDs being obsolete, theres no real way for black people to vote with their dollar when it comes to music.
Back in those days gone by,black people made their stance with their dollar, and bought the actual album to support the label. Streaming an artist on a white owned streaming service does nothing, barely such thing as an indie anymore cause your dollar goes to Apple/Spotify,one way or the other. Best thing people can do is support these live shows, cause thats where an artist(especially black artist)will make their living.
But a major black label just seems like Pixie dust at this point. Streaming has did its job,its killed any chance of any real movements starting any music again, labels are able to oversee music and make everything about music corporate. When the consumer chose to start paying $10/month for unlimited music, they gave away the power of the dollar within music with it.
In reality there's only 3 major labels anyway (Sony, Universal & Warner) with the rest being subsidiaries under the big 3, it's gonna take hell to freeze over in order for the music industry to actually grow and change from the monopolized hellscape it's become, let alone to get a Black-owned major, unfortunately
It can happen with time.
it’s happening right now
sexyy red is on a black owned major
as well as usher
just checked their ig and they distributed the Travis Scott film and have a partnership with a24
no new label from anyone will get big enough to rival the big 3.
they coming off 100+ years of dominance

I like your well tought out response but there is a way to vote with the Black dollar to support a Black label with Black musicians…the thing is the majority of Black people won’t support Black Business!!!…
No Limit >>>
P was the first rapper to make $100M and hustle his music to success!!!…Cash Money killed it with the $100M distro deal!!!…New Orleans can hustle!!!…P would def know what to do…bro made his own supercar brand!!!…
Hov, Kanye or Diddy could do it
But will they???…If so what’s stoppin’ them???…
I think it’s the same as saying Drake , Ye, Abel, etc. should create their own ceremony to celebrate black culture instead of relying on the Grammys
They just won’t do it
Not in our lifetime. Maybe not even in our kid(s) lifetime. But I’m confident it would happen eventually.
It can happen with time.
It would take a collapse of the current industry tho and a reversal of the overall lack of money in music

I wonder what would happen if the music industry collapsed

It’s already happening!!!…If YouTube ever dies it’s over for them!!!…The music industry is survivin’ off YouTube and riggin’ independents out!!!…Lyhor Cohen is head of YouTube Global Music…YouTube IS the label now!!!…If that goes…the industry goes and it will truly be wild…wild…west as far as music is concerned!!!…

That would be crazy if YouTube becomes that big.
