i did this video about five things i dont think artists should worry about and one thing i talked about is their instagram ratio lol. but im curious as a fan do you even look at that? some people (not just artists) spend so much time culling that number. does anyone even notice?

  • Nov 21, 2023

i know this sounds like an unbelievably stupid question but even people like pharrell are doing this lmao

It's humanizing that they aren't immune to s*** like that. By the same token, you want to hold an artist in a higher esteem than "human". It's a juvenile impulse, but it lends credibility to them as these great towering figures.

I've been reading a book called "The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life" by Irving Goffmman that talks about how people use style and behavior to project their position. In this case it kind of backfires. By trying too hard, I get the opposite impression. It's not "wow look at that ratio" it's "why does this famous celebrity care about his ratio".

Not caring about social media could also be a calculated performance. Maybe I'm a cynic though. KTT is the only place where I engage with artists as personalities. I don't follow any too closely. Athletes seem more relaxed about their image and are more entertaining to me.

Thanks for doing these videos. They're great ways to start threads.

damn this is like 3 levels above any kind of response i expected on here, i appreciate you

and i agree, while i personally have made a concerted effort to say f*** it to paying attention to my ratio and stuff like that, there is something weirdly endearing about pharrell still caring

and in musician circles i know this is something many of us think about but very rarely have i heard people talk about it

You're the magician revealing how they do their tricks. Most people do play that game. That's just what the game is!

Sharing the insider perspective is smart. Like if you ever try to do a viral marketing campaign, which I assume every major artist has a team of people doing, you can just make a video called "I tried to make my song go viral on Tik Tok" and you're almost documenting a social experiment in a way. Transparency can be immunity.

yea thats my goal. i honestly feel like the traditional paths to musician success are pretty cooked, and i keep having these conversations with other artists in person and its like. why not just do it for everybody?

what artists really need now is for people to root for them. they have so many options now for entertainment that the only real differential factor is caring about the person. i feel like this is the best way for me tbh. i have a different channel i started where i do non music stuff too because now that i learned how to edit its like why limit myself to just music haha

Now you just need to roll out a "program" where artists pay you to learn how to cultivate their brand and work social media and edit video and stuff. Become a consultant. That's the real hustle when the market is so thoroughly saturated.

Your videos are too long for your clout level

Should be 11-12 minute videos max in my opinion and preferably under 10

    I’m starting a channel soon 🫡

  • Nov 21, 2023

Nope, when we talking bout a low scale level, the best artists are the ones that follow other artists they're interested in.

Honestly found a lot of new artists just by seeing who another new artist I already like follows

i think it’s cool as hell virgil and drake follow thousands of people. i can see a famous person only following certain people on a public account then following whoever on a finsta

the latter one would be to protect people you know personally honestly like if i had a large following idk how i’d feel about following close family members just to protect their privacy but on my public account i’d follow random artists and pages i liked since they’re public figures anyway

real. this is prob the predominant response so its funny to think about the amount of time artists spend caring about it

oh yea following close family stuff for sure. i was imagining more like, if a big artist had a burner and was following small artists on there. bc having seen drake follow two people i know personally, its pretty sick when they get platformed that way

I never thought about whether it would affect an artist like that. Interesting to think about tbh

yeah, i said it in the longer video but people start unfollowing people they actually like to stay under a certain number. ive seen artists do it to me (and ive done it in the distant past although now i realize how corny it is) and i def look at those artists differently lol

    no

but if anyone follow more than they have followers its a side-eye - especially if i dont know them at all

gives off desperate or perhaps even bot account/bot buyer

yea thats definitely a classic situation where if you follow like wayyyyyyyyy too many people it just gives off consumer account and not creator account which is totally fine! the lines are so blurred now though

  • yeah i do because im a groupie

if an artist follows over 1,000 niggas they aren’t mysterious enough for me
