Listening to nba’s new album and it’s good but to me his music has sounded the same since I first heard of him like 2 years ago. I feel like i can say that for other artist but that’s another topic, I feel like an album should try to cover as many different sounds as possible. Like some tracks should be lyrical, others melodic, and some should be like r&b and pop. Some should be serious and others about having fun, you know?

    Not across their discography.

On an album it depends on the artist and the sound they are going.

Depends what an artist is trying to accomplish. If all they do is make albums of bangers with no substance that’s cool if they know what their role is. Probably never gonna be in an all time list but I appreciate them for what they are

It has to be different they don't have to turn into a Kendrick but try to do something new for an album that doesn't make you look like a Dababy. Also depends on what they're trying to accomplish

I like cohesion, but when they’re discography is at the same level every time it gets kind of difficult to understand the music and differentiate different songs. And the sound needs to be different every time. Every album and song may need a different sound. I think this is why I like versatile producer discographies because not every song is the same produced thing. Like The Neptunes, Kanye west, Lex Luger, Tyler, etc.

doesn’t have to matter if they mastered that art without sounding stale

No, if you have the same sound across your entire discography then after it'll get boring and eventually I'll lose interest in the artist.

When switching sounds, its still important that the music sounds like it's still from the same artist and that it still stands out, like if Young Thug started making traditional boom bap while rapping traditionally he'd lose what makes him stand out and the switch would feel bizarre, rather than exciting.

of course not. people gave da baby s*** for sounding the same on records no one wants to hear the same type of song from an artist even if they're good at it

I’m a new casual YB fan but I’d say him. My brother put me on Still Flexin, Still Steppin And that’s my favorite of him I’ve heard so far. All his music is good but everything generally does sound the same.

That’s what I was just thinking about, only artist I can think of that switched their sound without sounding different was Lil Wayne with rebirth, he can go on anything honestly.

    An album has different connotations

Because there's a difference between an album having a unified sound and therefore songs sound similar vs a song's structure being repeated through an album ad nauseum

The former is what I think nba is going for.

rick rubin made a good point in his flying lotus interview about how some artists you want to sound different every record and others you never want their sound to change. he said if artists want to make different sounding albums then they should set the precedent early on so that its expected by the fans, otherwise the reception to a sudden left turn will likely be bad

People hated on Abel for switching up his sound every album but everyone knows that trilogy sound would have gotten stale fast
