Although Drake does have status as a mainstay in hip hop, one lynchpin that critics have on him is his apparent diversion to social themes in his music.
He's touched on them every now and then...
"I did some charity today for the kids" Charged Up
"“Cops are killing people with their arms up / And your main focus is trying to harm us?" Charged Up
""I used to get teased for being black, and now I'm here and I'm not black enoughCause I'm not acting tough or making stories up bout where I'm actually from"" You & The Six
""And I heard someone say something that stuck with me a lotBout how we need protection from those protectin' the block Nobody lookin' out for nobody Maybe we should try and help somebody or be somebody Instead of bein' somebody that makes the news So everybody can tweet about it And then they start to RIP about it And four weeks later nobody even speaks about it Damn, I just had to say my piece about it Oh you gotta love it But they scared of the truth so back to me showin' out in public That's a hotter subject"" 6 PM in New York
Is this just not his lane? Will he have a SOCIALLY important song like the ones listed in the title?
Just gonna drop this song here. Drake has definitely commented on cultural and societal issues, but at the end of the day he’s doing it for the cash flow, and that’s not where the cash flows.
Yeah it's not his lane. He's not a socially concious rapper like Ye was back in the day, Kendrick is or Cole is.
But he excels in what he does and that's why people like him
Not Around officially coming soon
Jesus Walks lost a lot of significance for me when I found it was originally a Rhymefest song
Whats so important in “Jesus Walks”?
Honest question.
I’m struggling to understand the importance of Jesus Walks when the same guy, 16 or so years later supported an areligious bigot who used religion as a tool to get votes.
Corny to me tbh
