Whitney didn’t write or produce which was like an automatic disqualification with being truly taken serious by critics then.

If we are at a point though where albums like Rihanna’s Anti can be considered classics by critical consensus then Whitney’s debut is her best idea of classic in similar vein. Really solid selection of songs and a handful of the songs are among the best R&B songs of that time.

Mariah was kind redundant/one-note with her songwriting in the 90s which was her biggest “flaw”.

Daydream has iconic hits, Butterfly is a fan favorite, and Emancipation was a huge moment for her even if it wasn’t artistically much new.

All of her albums mostly play it safe and calculated too, but I think Butterfly was genuinely her craft at its peak and Emancipation has “standard” R&B songs.

i mean if you have to think about if they even have a classic album to start that kinda answers some of the questions on why they're not there. Most of the responses here and what i saw from twitter didn't even bother suggesting a specific project

Honestly don't think Whitney was an album act enough to just say one but Butterfly or Emancipation (biased on the latter cus i actually lived through the era) probably. Neither was going to make this list tho

Apple's list was very limiting and had a bizarre construct but even then....there are acts already on the list who coulda have realistically taken more spots before considering to add a Mariah album honestly.
