    yes

also writing for someone else can also mean musically as well, ghostwriting and co-writing aren't limited to lyrics

  • Aug 17, 2020

Only thing that matters is if the song is good

Hasn’t mattered since like the 90s tbh. Most of the dudes from the 2000s didn’t right their stuff either. You think 50 really wrote all those raps? Nah

Probably only Eminem was really writing And Jay-Z and Wayne off the dome.

no. if the music is good then who cares

This is the reason why mainstream music sounds the way it sounds now.

ngl it's still means a lot to me even when it comes to singers.
Ye is my favorite artist and I take pride in it as a fan that he wrote TTW, POWER, SAINT PABLO, SAY YOU WILL and other great songs but it hurts when you know a lot of ppl been inside the pot.
imagine if Fiona Apple or Nina Simone had a bunch of writers. Makes the music feel less personal and authentic

I think writing your own verses doesn't matter anymore in this era cuz mainstream rappers aren't striving to be the best rappers lyrically but instead musically.

Eazy E performed on the "Straight Outta Compton" album without writing a single bar himself. You think "Niggas" respect him less?

Jay got heat for years for borrowing flows and taking older lyrics and re shaping them.

Not to imply that Jay has writers (although I’m sure people help with melodies), but if an artist is a real artist they’re not gonna have lasting power just cause they use help writing songs. There’s a lot more to the craft of being a rapper than writing every single lyric, unless you’re entire image is based on that.

It’s like saying a director is a fraud cause he has a screen writers and doesn’t shoot and or edit their own films.

Lauryn Hill supposedly gets way too much credit for the contributions to miseduction, but she’s the artist, there’s no album without her.

This only proves my point. Not writing your own s*** is not the deal breaker some people think it is.

  • Aug 17, 2020

it doesn't to me but i do understand where older hip hop purists see it as a bad thing

    As a rapper, yes.
Hes respected as a businessman and an entrepreneur but as a rapper?

    Nah.
