Nicki outrapped Jay Z 2 years before starships came out. When roman reloaded came out, it took a long time for her to shake that stigma cuz she was chasing pop hits even long after she stopped. The biggest difference between Nicki and Doja is that Doja blew up off a pop focused album. Nicki did not. Nicki also was known for her mistakes prior to her debut album and being affiliated with Gucci.

Niggas do not know or remember Doja when she was freestyling in dumbfoundeads car or when she rapping over her sgp beats. We can argue back and forth what music she actually makes but the bottom line is that she's not considered a rapper by many because she's not perceived as one. Especially when she is marketed and pushed as a pop act despite her songs with French Montana and etc. Which was the entire point of scarlet.

S*** Flo Rida, all that nigga did was rap and how many consider him a rapper?

You asked for a why and I answered.

if you really want to conflate the perception of something with what it actually is, you do you

but just know that’s not how things work under the hood, im sure if this was a less controversial artist you wouldn’t be clutching your pearls this hard and rationalizing why you just can’t call her a rapper

I like Doja Cat despite her cooning, that's just how it is. S*** even if I personally considered her a rapper especially knowing her backstory, that's still why a lot of people do not consider her a rapper.

There's a reason why artist like Missy and Lauryn Hill are hip hop with no push back while some y'all gotta type paragraphs for Doja to be hip hop.

that’s bs because I have argued with others on here especially that they don’t think the miseducation of Lauryn Hill isn’t rap because “she rapped on it for 20 minutes or so”

  • we just making up s*** now

  • You would think this wouldn't be such an issue considering most of her major label releases are literally pop songs

I've called Drake a popstar many times on KTT lmao I don't give a f*** what people call Nicki Minaj. But you know damn well people are calling her a rapper. I don't think I've ever heard her called a popstar, and she herself says she's a rapper.

I love Doja Cat, she’s one of my favorite artists this decade and I went to her tour and had a great time. She’s a great artist and an amazing performer.

But the reason I don’t consider her rap is that I’ve never once listened to her music and felt like I was listening to rap music. Even with Scarlet, it all still feels like there’s a pop layer over it all.

And I don’t think it’s a gender thing either, because I’ve never questioned whether artists like Meg or Cardi or the City Girls or Latto or GloRilla or Sexyy Red or Flo Milli are rappers.

Doja Cat next to those names stands out like a sore thumb to me when talking about genres.

I consider her to be in the same realm as Post Malone, where there’s obvious hip-hop influence but as a whole it’s not hip-hop music

Love Doja Cat but she’s not a rapper we gotta stop pushing that

    She’s a bonafide pop star
