did they shoot at it on purpose thinking it was someone else or was just in the line of fire?
Surface to air misslies (also referred to as SAMs) are automated anti-air defense systems, which is what I think this got shot down by.
I think what happened was they forgot to turn it off (because they just bombed near the US bases, they were on edge because they thought retaliation could happen at any second), or the operator detected the plane as a threat and launched a defensive attack on it.
Another thing I read was that all commercial airplanes like that have a computer on the inside of them that are supposed to communicate with anti-air systems like this and basically tell them it's not a threat/they're transporting civilians/etc. And on this particular flight, that computer or component was malfunctioning, which is where they got the 'plane malfunction' excuse which is technically true...
Either way, it's a major f*** up. It's clear no one got any visual confirmation. They just saw 'Threat detected' and fired away.

Actually came from this:
It's more likely Star Trek copied the Air Force but the government has a history of paying homage to Star Trek because it's filled with nerds. They named the first space shuttle after Enterprise after all.
It consists of all the divisions that are in charge of satellites, missile defense and rocket launch platforms like Cheyenne Mountains, Cape Canaveral, Vandenberg Airforce Base and prob Area 51 too.

Nah They named Enterprise because of a legendary aircraft carrier named USS Enterprise who she first saw in the Pacific theater of Second World War. She also survived the Pearl Harbor attack. Which the Japs were going for and didn't find it.
