A Very interesting YouTube comment I just read. Courtesy of lordofgiovanni on Ruff Criminal’s “I want to talk about Donda” video (also worth checking out).
“Yeezus was an open casket funeral for CDs. It was a cd album.
JIK was an old school gospel record, it was a vinyl.
Donda is an album for the playlist generation.”
What do you think?
Is Donda album art a phone screen?
it is an album for the playlist generation but I don’t think thats what he had in mind for that, maybe if it was a portrait jpeg
Donda is all black because it is an album about death and loss. Black is the mourning color and also represents nothingness. Ye is mourning the loss of his family, his mother, and his friends who have passed like DMX and Kobe.

Also, the album sounds pretty dark due to usage of organs and heavy pianos, even the lighter toned tracks like Believe What I Say were stripped down to fit the album.

it's a scrying mirror
It's black because the label didn't know what the artwork was when they STOLE the album from Kanye and sent it in to DSP's.

This, and to add to it the album constantly references feeling imprisoned and being trapped in an endless night.
The black cover is lazy sure but it is perfect for this album.
Ah yes JIK the very old school gospel album with its uses of electronic bass, synths & trap inspired drums

pretty cool how you mentioned them stripping down lighter tone tracks because it made me think about how it makes sense that they removed the bright piano notes from songs like 2020 twitter snippet BWIS and LP1 Pure Souls
