There are so many disingenuous points in this thread. In rap, numbers and popularity, moving units and more recently "taking the summer" has mattered. It doesn't mean the record that sells the most is better, but it does mean that listeners are gravitating to one or the other.

Drake and Kanye fans care about numbers because it's apart of hip hop - it was just a foregone conclusion that CLB would do better.

Drake dropped an album with no real rollout besides the billboards on the thursday. No big pop hits on the album really, and it still broke records and affirmed Drake is #1. It's still one of my favorite newer Drake albums, regardless of some of the criticisms.

Kanye went directly to the people with his listening parties, controlled the narrative even with the review bombing, and reclaimed his spot as the #2 (until Kendrick?). The fact he sold 300k with 2.5 days of the weekend missed is incredible. Also the fact that if he dropped right after the listening party, the hype factor would have been higher too.
