it’s also his least vulnerable

drake is basically the antithesis of kendrick in terms of values and content

on this album drake is hiding behind his money, popularity, etc more than ever

there’s no denying he’s great at delivering raps but even that is in question cause i hear future’s writing behind a lot of the material and flows

i progressively feel more pity for drake because i can hear how empty his life must be based on this music he’s standing behind

this album isn’t something i’m going to run back over and over

I usually just hit up google and check out the reviews that pop up first tbh and that’s usually one of the ones you named but sometimes it’s somebody else

I disagree that critics should reflect the opposite of public opinion, I think some of them believe that and that’s an issue. Weather we talking music, movies, video games etc the purpose of a review is to help the AVERAGE consumer determine weather said product is worth their time. The purpose should not be to be contrarian and snobbish. Yes it should be based off their professional opinion but it should also have the consumer in mind.

IGN giving GOW ragnorok a 10/10 review is one of the reasons I’m so excited to play it. That review gives me confidence in spending my money as a consumer.

With music it’s different now bc of streaming so we are not actually buying an individual project and maybe that’s part of the problem, music is taken for granted.

Your last point hits it right on the head.

I think reviews in music just generally matter less now because music is so easily accessible nowadays. For $10 a month you can listen to whatever you want however many times you want to.

Whereas 15-20 years ago, multiple albums came out per week at $10 each, so relying on reviews to figure out where your money would be best well spent held merit.

With video games it’s still valuable because video games are way more expensive than a single album and also a way bigger time investment than a 40 minute LP is.

Professional music reviews are becoming like a niche thing now because 1) anyone out there with internet access and a camera can be considered a music reviewer, and 2) they’re not as relied upon for consumer financial decisions as they used to be

I respect how you feel about the album totally within your right but to critique Drake for something that is a basic fundamental of rap is a little unfair imo. Kendrick and Drake are two totally different artists at this point and both excel in their lanes, but I don’t fault one for not dabbling in the other. Just my opinion though

it's all subjective though so it probably doesn't speak to me because i don't put a lot of value on money, cars, broads, etc anymore

i should clarify that i don't think drake literally copy/pasted but instead took old demos off yachty and made slight changes to them

backoutsideboyz sounds like 80:20 yachty to drake
jumbotron s*** poppin is like 60:40 yachty to drake

i should also clarify that i don't care about drake's writing integrity at all. song sounds good? that's good enough for me. and both of these songs are good. praise is due for yachty & drake. i'm personally annoyed with this because of people denying any yachty involvement and underrepresenting his current/recent pen game. i think drake superfans are quick to jump and deny this because of the PTSD they have after that meek mill summer but sharing bars/demos is so common that it's not even worth a diss anymore
