I don't think Drake wanted to show his Toronto roots early in his career. He has said that he felt pressure to sound more American early in his career. But the UK and Toronto music scenes were not popping off like they are today back then. They started getting big around the mid 2010's and that's when Drake started showing love. But if you hear him speak he's always had a Toronto accent. That s*** didn't just magically appear out of nowhere. If you from Toronto or the GTA you can definitely tell Drake was raised in Toronto just based on his accent and the way he talks
