I can’t remember who was touching on it, but I think the biggest thing that sticks out to me is how mature his lyrics sound. We’ve heard a million songs from Drake talking about women, but this sounds like true GROWTH in regards to how he approaches it. He doesn’t need to overcomplicate it, doesn’t need to deduce to more standard Drake-ish mannerisms, this is forreal a mature, and most importantly refreshing take on relations and relationships from him. I know for a younger crowd it may not connect as much, but you can really see the influence of more contemporary R&B songwriting on here
If this album is growing on people this quickly, I wonder how high it'll be rated in like a year. Drake really has one of the most excellent discographies ever. It's damn near impossible to do a top 10/20/30 Drake songs list and now it's getting even harder to make a list for his top projects lol.
every drake album/tape has at least 1-2 classic top tier Drake records which makes his ranking so hard
honest this album has at least 2-3 TOP TIER DRAKE TYPE OF RECORDS ON HERE
This album seems like a response to CLB though no? The biggest criticisms I heard coming out of CLB was that it sounds the same/has the same formula as every other Drake album and that people didn’t wanna hear a Drake album full of features. That along with the name of the album and the “Big Fan of your Old Stuff” merch it paints a picture to me that this indeed was a response even though you can tell he’s having fun with the music
It’s a response in theory, but listening to the actual album you’d have no idea that it was

He let his sade side come out heavy on this album lyrically
“Kill me slowly with those piercing eyes, dont break my fall”
dats some sade s***

Yeah ngl the boy like 5 classics in at this point (SFG TC NWTS IYRTITL HNM)
5 and two possibles really (WATTBA, Views)
As far as the rest I wouldn’t argue that More Life or DLDT are anywhere near classic status but they are super solid and respectable releases
Only ones I can’t get into are TML, Scorp, and CLB
And even those aren’t “bad”
People run with the “he has no classics” narratives because the critics don’t validate his work like they do Ye and Kendrick which is why I always say these biased/hating ass critics are not just harmless people sharing their opinions. They are effecting how the public perceives certain artist legacies in a negative way and that’s wack.
My bad, went off on a tangent there

absolutely.. lyrics can be describing many different type of situations .. not just about a certain "girl" or a relationship
for example overdrive
I dont know how toeexactly explain it but his lyrics seem a lot less shallow and one sided? if that makes sense....
still has the simplicity but in a diverse way. I'm just rambling

Absolutely! Even further to your point I believe he played some Sade on his inspiration mix prior to the album

You wanna realize how ridiculous Drake's catalog is? Break everything down into songs. Do it in categories of:
Singles
Features
Remixes
Loosies
Leaks
He's undefeated lmao. No one comes close.

bro I think thats the only way you can rank his best songs... you really have to break it down in categories like this.
jeez!

At this point, anyone who still actually thinks he has no classics is an idiot. Sorry.

There's really no other way to do it.

I don’t think we can call HNVM a classic so soon lol, imma give it at least 2 years before I consider it a classic
Every paragraph of this Complex review hits the spot lol.
Drake’s career has been a continuous sparring match with himself, trying to top every record he’s set, defeating enemies that his paranoia has created, and making music that the masses will enjoy the same way he does. He’s still growing as a person, but he’s not putting all of that progress in the music just yet. At this new intersection of his life, though, he finally appears to be less concerned with pleasing everyone, and more focused on releasing the things he likes. So it’s ironic that he received such heavy scrutiny for relying on his same old formula throughout CLB, but has still been criticized for dropping an album like Honestly, Nevermind, which is the polar opposite of that. That’s why being a people-pleaser in music is a damning quality; it’s impossible to make everyone happy.
In true people-pleaser fashion, though, Drake confirmed on his OVO Sound radio that he’ll be releasing another Scary Hours project soon, which will likely come packed with the bars that hip-hop heads will enjoy. This could be a successful new formula for him to utilize going forward, allowing him to please large portions of his fanbase while also giving them a taste of the things he enjoys. Making a bunch of different albums that are each focused on specific aspects of his canon (from an R&B Drake album to a rap Drake album), would not only reflect his range, but also give him a chance to experiment with sounds in a concise way rather than trying to fit a bit of everything onto each project.

The quality is there. If we see true stability and impact in sound (which both seem to be in play) it’s going to be hard to argue against it imo. I agree though, too early for the GP but issa classic to me
