Toronto rap used to sound like watered down NY a generation ago

glad they're at least trying to make a unique mark on rap

but yeah the new Toronto rappers are grating to listen to

    watered down is an understatement

The thing is that toronto suffers from being seen as an extension of US so people expect that culture (in this case black hip hop culture) to have that same authenticity

demographically toronto is just so different than the US that whatever the cities interpretation of what its hip hop sound should be will always sound too different

It really should be how people delineate uk rap from us rap

  • Bit repetitive but overall good

new york took what the UK had and made it 10000x better

Toronto's unique sound was the dark R&B/hip hop sound that was popular in the 2010s(popularized by Drake/Weeknd)

what are you talking about? If you're talking about our underground scene that's made up of low tier artists making the same repetitive drill music then yes I agree, but keep in mind almost every city has artists like that(including London and New York)

If we're talking mainstream(which we should be considering), then we clear almost every city aside from LA, New York and Atlanta.

Toronto has Drake,Tory, Weeknd, Nav, PND, Belly, Killy, Duvy

Lol detroit and Chicago scenes are better than toronto’s by a mile

Drake does not have a toronto sound, he has a drake sound

Weeknd and pnd are not rappers

The thing is that u have people who are doing the street s*** and that sucks

And the people trying to go the ovo/xo dark, melodic bassy route also really suck

So the music is just bad and unfocused from all angles

Compare this to a detroit where u have an actual cohesive and quality sound

I forgot to add Chicago actually. Chicago has a really great music scene(Kanye ,Von, Durk, Herbo)

Tell me some Detroit artists that are poppin right now aside from Sean and 42 Dugg(Neither of them currently make better music than the artists I mentioned right now(maybe nav)).

Weeknd and PND are considered HipHop artists. There's a difference between what's considered HipHop and what's defined as a rapper.. They have also both rapped before on different tracks(Low Life, King of the Fall, Over Here, Break From Toronto for example) and their lyrical content, subject matter and collaborators encompasses what HipHop is about

I'm only stating this because this goes against your original statement.

I agree with you on the street s*** aspect of the Toronto Hip Hop Scene. I think its trash for the most part too aside from Duvy and Pengz who make that type of music.
