It’s a pattern at this point.
He needs to start reaching for that high pedestal he put himself on once upon a time.
If we're looking at albums only Views and Scorpion were not generic or Drake just going with the general sound. Views set the sound and Scorpion was Drake embracing that even more. None of his albums fit with the modern sound when they released

I also think he may have done this to do a temperature check. He’s definitely gonna come back here and check responses.

Cole literally adapted his sound to fit this generation so I don’t think this is a good point. Go listen to 4YEO or 2014 Forest Hills Drive then compare it to what he’s been doing since 2018. There’s some songs on The Off Season that are still in the vein of 4YEO and FHD but it’s also very current. Only thing he kinda brought back was his rapping style from his mixtapes.
That rapping style is a big part of the problem here. Drake’s going down the Future/Thugga lane of rapping and there’s no point trying to do that when they already do it better.
I can understand adding elements of trendy music into your project as long as it doesn’t overcast the whole thing but that’s not what this is.
This is an entire track in that trendy social media hiphop style and Drake really put this out as a “get excited for CLB” post which worries me about the direction of the project as a whole.

I understand what you saying. I don’t think the song sounds bad but I can see why you feel the way you feel cause it’s like he’s gotten too comfortable with keeping up with the current sound.
On the other hand, I do think the beat selection works sometimes in the case of songs like Lie to Me, Not Around, Lotta 42 (Rest in Pieces). Those songs have classic potential evidenced by the huge positive response on here. Also, Time Flies, Deep Pockets, and Not You Too worked. Those are songs that are gonna age really well for him and had that lo-fi sound.
That lo-fi sound is honestly a sound he helped create and it’s apart of his soundscape/brand. You go to Drake to hear that atmospheric dark s***. So I just think it’s how you look at it but fair critique overall.
I've been focused on the DRUM PATTERNS. I have nothing with him using atmospheric soundscapes. The drum programming in his beats are lazy and repetitive and he's done them a lot better in the past, which is why I know it's lazy.
No one here has complained about the bars or the sample but him rapping over beats like that is dated and he can't continue to expect everyone to be impressed by that. We're in 2021.
He can do that s*** on a project like DLDT that he classifies as a throwaway or something he "just put together." But expectations for an album he's been working on for 3 years will be a lot higher and rightfully so.

And he put 6 God on SoundCloud months before IYRTITL
It's a good sign because he's confident

Eh, Drake adds a different dimension or a unique dimension to that style because of his penmansip but that’s a fair point.
This song sounds like an intro or interlude so I don’t if it’s something to worry about but I feel where you coming from.

...so my point stands that the last two albums went with that trend and it’s been a pattern of a slow decline since then.
None of his albums fit in before the last two and that’s why they stood out.
