“I’m what the culture feeling” - Kendrick Lamar
“Every song going #1 cuz of drake” - KTT2
“Is this the industry going against drake?” - KTT2
Drakes fans’ narratives about culture are strictly based on quantity and ignore the very complicated nature of culture. No one in that group is asking why these disses are so popular, and it’s because they lack an understanding of how the world works outside of simple business perspectives.
Let’s talk about culture first. Culture is a massive, amorphous, qualitative thing. Numbers can describe aspects culture but they cannot make conclusions as to how an object relates to culture. This is a big issue drake fans and 6ix9ine fans had in common. Their primary narrative was that the commercial popularity of their artists somehow meant they possessed a controlling force over cultural narratives
This is dumb. Big numbers only contribute to control is economic narratives. How many extremely popular figures exist as antagonists in culture? The devil? The police? These are forces that exist to unify an opposition. Attributing that quality as a controlling positive to the subject stupid af. Using measures that don’t apply to the topic we’re discussing only makes it more stupid
I think drake fans, like 6ix9ine fans, have incorrectly assessed how drake got to where he is, what his name means, and how this beef relates to all of that. His commercial success means little in regards to his cultural reputation, and his cultural reputation DEFINITELY doesn’t have to be a positive one when we see just why his name is so popular right now.
It’s also funny when people consider this coming together against drake to be some industry meddling when, once again, the entire Schtick of drake’s fanbase has only been talking about numbers like they’re industry A&R’s. Meanwhile drake is bragging about jerking off with Lucian Grange. Drake IS the industry and the way his fans discuss his cultural presence is only a runoff proof of that.
He is a cultural laughingstock, and no boasting about attention or numbers will get people that comfortable
Good thread. I would say it relates to capitalism more than anything else, which manifests itself as people seeing bigger number = better person.
However, there is something to be said of output. Drake undeniably has a lot of output in the culture regardless of quality and that in itself gives him some cultural cache or resonance. Like could we even call Lil Wayne one of the GOATs if it wasn't for his extraordinary mixtape era run? What if we only had Tha Carter series to judge him on?
I do agree that Drake doesn't have the cultural reputation he should have to be considered a titan but audiences themselves can be nebulous things.
it’s honestly crazy breaking out of the drake stan brainwash machine and seeing it in action

I don’t wanna use the C word because people wouldn’t shut up abt it
What culture are you speaking about specifically...and please provide a picture of your hand.

I’m talking about a set of dynamics that exist in any cultural conversation in the modern day
It’s the same s*** with Taylor swift fans, Stanley cup fans, people who somehow are TikTok fans, Marvel fans, Call of Duty fans, Kai Cenat fans, and anything else where a LOT people’s attachment to the product end up being found in its sheer quantity
