UMG played themselves big time because Drake wouldn't have been able to sue them if they hadn't let their ego and pride determine how they interacted with him. It's very clear that Drake and UMG had issues brewing even before this Kendrick beef came in the picture because no one does a sudden 180° turn on their biggest star overnight.

Drake's legal team has already submitted pages upon pages of correspondence between him and UMG, where he asked to meet with them regarding the defamatory material on Not Like Us and how the massive push behind it was messing with his actual life and they told him to f*** off. He asked them to put out a statement as a label basically saying what they're saying now: that he isn't a pedophile and the allegations in the song are only meant to be taken as hyperbole and UMG told him to f*** off as well so good luck to them proving to a judge that they didn't have malicious intent.

UMG could have easily put out a statement clarifying that the things being said by both parties weren't meant to be taken as fact and covered their asses legally from both sides. If they'd done that and Drake still sued them, they'd at least have that to show the judge that they weren't being malicious and the judge would have dismissed this case months ago. They didn't because there was always a plan in place for who they were going to push viciously and who they were aiming to f*** over.

It's especially funny seeing them now trying to act like they've only ever worked in Drake's best interest, all the while behind the scenes daring him to sue them and taunting him saying the rap world would mock him if he sued them and so he better not do it. When Drake's lawyers made mention of it at first, it seemed like a reach but since then, UMG has threatened him publicly, telling him to be careful what he wishes for and using motions and legal briefings to m taunt and mock him — these are all things the judge is reading and picking up on btw.

How do you do all that and then tell the very person you claim to be protecting and working in service of to f*** off when they tell you that material you're massively pushing and promoting is harming their everyday life? Especially when it's material you claim you've always known is false? Moreover, how do you prove that to a judge who now has a long-enough history showing you have been dealing in bad faith with Drake months before he ever sued you?

So who are you gonna blame when Drake loses this case? Is the judge in bed with Lucian?

hope UMG’s lawyer takes note that even drake acknowledged NLU’s hit appeal on THP6 and as a record label they were simply doing their job by pushing a song with such appeal :

Didn’t he call himself a pedo first?

Drake: “Tell em I like young girls.”

Kendrick: “Certified lover boy. Certified pedophile.”

Drake: “THIS F***ING MIDGET CALLED ME A PEDOPHILE!!!!!!”

Drake just salty everyone was saying that line, and not “DAVE FREEEEEEEeeeeeeeee”. Nothing deeper than that.

He expected everyone to shake their ass like Odell Beckham to that line and not two step to WOP WOP WOP WOP DOT F*** EM UPPP

Every time you bring this up to them, their brains malfunction

They then pivot to “yeah but UMG shouldn’t have supported Not Like Us!!!”

The same way they supported Family Matters by greenlighting a music video and official midnight release with an entire clean version attached to it? Who the f*** releases a clean version of a diss record unless they’re tryna get that s*** played on the radio?

Clearly Drake thought Family Matters was either gonna be a hit or go viral in some capacity and then was salty when the people organically chose Not Like Us instead. That’s the only reason we have a lawsuit today

It was never was gonna be a radio hit anway

    It's 7 minutes long
Has no catchy hook or refrain
    Has 3 beat switches

Why in the f*** would UMG want to put money behind a song like that?

I really wanna hear the stans try to defend or rationalize a clean version releasing without it being because Drake thought the song would be big

That’s literally the only reason to release a censored version of a song

i doubt he thought family matters would become a hit but definitely thought it would “end” the beef and didn’t see kendrick coming out with a banger like NLU, it blindsided him
