Why would Universal damage their cash cow only to re-sign them for diminishing returns? If they only want his back catalog then they could buy it out from him via Tech firm
Other than that, Drake’s newer music hasn’t even touched the Top 50 after the beef. So destroying Drake’s reputation just to re-sign him to a worse deal where they’ll probably make less money makes zero sense
i mean, i think that's basically the actual thing at the crux of the lawsuit. the beef didn't really damage drake's career in terms of streams on back catalog but it did his public reputation (which this isn't helping lol). they're making a convoluted but valid claim here. i'm not really saying UMG did actively do this to be clear, i don't think there's some 27D chess going on, but the lawyers' framing of the case is convincing enough from a generic judge's standpoint so long as they aren't lying about contracts or stipulations.

Russell Westbrook went from highest paid to a $4m contract just because of that Laker season. He was bummin a bit but the media kept putting extras on it and everybody believed the narratives that hes washed and isnt valuable. Fast forward now and he matchin triple doubles with Jokic on a contract season that number going back up he wont get $40m a year again but it wont be just $4m for sure

Another angle I think Westbrook did it on purpose to facilitate a birds rights trade to a competitor like Denver cause I think he could have definitely gotten a better deal but chose to stay with the winning opportunity in LA and eventually opt-in so he can be traded and now turn up for the ring then cash out to retirement.
