I'm talking about DISS TRACKS, not songs that have niggas sending shots. And how many of those songs actually went up on DSPs? How many of those "battles" did we, as a culture, give a f*** about or take note of? That's my question.
I'm not disputing that there are battles happening in the underground scene. That's a given.
My point is that the last 3 major rap battles we've cared about in rap have ALL involved Drake. It was Meek vs. Drake, Pusha T vs. Drake and now Kendrick vs. Drake.
In the Meek battle, it's a known fact that Drake refused UMG from pushing Back to Back as a single and forced them to push Hotline Bling instead. He didn't want them to submit the song for Grammy nomination (this is something Ebro confirmed). Back to Back had zero defamatory content and only went up on DSPs AFTER the battle was decided and Drake was crowned the winner. In the Pusha T battle, none of the diss tracks went up on DSPs. In this Kendrick battle, Drake initially didn't want any of his songs to go up on DSPs, but y'all kept harassing him, insisting that if he didn't upload Push Ups on DSPs, he wasn't claiming it, etc, so that's why his diss tracks started going up there.
Drake's aim in all his rap battles has always been to keep it as far away from label interference as possible.
