He dropped push ups and tried to gain the approval of the people and get them to count Kendrick out early.
Kendrick was able to get ahold of the second part of the diss (the red button) soon after push ups dropped because Drake was betrayed by someone in his own team.
During a 2 week stretch of trolling and using AI antics by Drake, Kendrick used that time to rebuttal a diss no one had even heard with multiple various sounding records.
He first warned him not to take it there or he would take it further and said that he would spare him on that track for now(unless he chose to take it there)
He dropped 6:16 in LA and baited him again to see if he would actually have the gall to be that disrespectful to his family and actually drop family matters. He might’ve backed off or at least given him a different version of attacks that were more competition oriented had Drake reconsidered but he didn’t.
When Family matters dropped, Kendrick had Meet the grahams ready to rebuttal and stop the momentum of it before it had a chance to take off. In this track he’s addressing his family and his allegations reach a level of scathing that has previously been unimaginable to most.
He knew this would be unexpected by Drake and that he wouldn’t be prepared for the response nor have the time to stop its momentum. He then put the icing on the cake with not like us and doubled down on the most damning angle of the entire beef with a track that would be a viral sensation.
Drake’s earlier decision to troll him with drop drop drop and time tracking antics backfired because he was then forced to rush a response or be looked at as a hypocrite to anyone paying close enough attention to his antics when pushups first dropped.
At this point in the battle, drakes response needed to be an all time great diss in order to sway the momentum back in his favor and unfortunately for him, it lacked any real bite, energy, charisma and he sounded downright deflated and disheartened by the turn of events.
He’s then left with the results of what damage has been done and what the public has to say. Not just his dedicated fan base but the general consensus across the board which has been overwhelmingly Kendrick leaning.
I’m on record as a fan of pushups and stated that Drake has a chance to beat Kendrick from the beginning being that he is a formidable rapper and has been battle tested before and Kendrick had not been. Pushups was a great start and family matters was a mean diss but he shot his wad with those two records and for the most part the disses don’t get any deeper, don’t go into any other spaces than when they started. He doubled down on a few things he’s already stated on previous records and basically said that’s all I got.
Kendrick got into several different bags, lyrical, conceptual, a***ytic, spiritual, psychological, funny and energetic. He was able to articulate a flawed personality top to bottom within 4 quality and extremely repeatable songs. The impact of these records and the execution of their preparation and release was a masterclass of chess against what many saw as the master chess player of hip hop currently.
