this song so emotional; it touches on the transitory existence of being alive in 2025. we are all indeed just btc
True, but Drake’s never really followed that strategy. Also, his choice of singles post-Scorpion has been utterly horrific. (Not saying What Did I Miss? is a bad choice, just saying why it would explain if later on this isn’t the hit from the album)
Idk if it was intentional or not but he kinda did that with $$$4U. Gimmie a Hug got pushed first then Nokia rang off
I feel you though. I just feel like this rollout kinda has to be a little different than his standard role out because of the beef. If he would’ve just immediately dropped some hit chasing sounding s*** I feel like it would’ve looked weak on his part. R&B collab album with party is one thing but your first studio album post the biggest battle in rap history? No way you can just act like that s*** ain’t happen and conduct business as usual. A few people criticize him for still talking about it but trust, if he didn’t the majority of people would’ve FRIED him lol

Drake always has ‘street singles’ like they said a decade ago
The am/pm tracks before albums, summer 16, the scary hours were all pre album singles to get the streets hot
The am/pm tracks before albums, summer 16, the scary hours were all pre album singles to get the streets hot
Another good example is SFTB and HOWGH
Both were huge but HOWGH was definitely the bigger hit and came after SFTB got the streets hot

We even got pop style (featuring the throne) before we got the real album version

They both dropped at the same time

Right, but the question was whether or not What Did I Miss? is the lead single for Iceman or not. All of the singles you named were never theorized to be the leads for the albums they were preceding
Another perfect example,
Pop Style then One Dance
Maybe that face first snippet or that one song he played called spring is coming with a strawberry is a tease towards a more poppy style upcoming single?
Another perfect example,
Pop Style then One Dance
Pop Style and One Dance dropped on the exact same night, don’t really think it applies here
When it comes to his albums, the one that most fits the approach you’re referencing is NWTS: Started from the Bottom -> Hold On, We’re Going Home
But even then, SFTB was a hit made for the radio.
Other than that, nothing really fits:
TML: Over -> Find Your Love
Take Care: Marvin’s Room -> Headlines
Scorpion: God’s Plan -> Nice For What
Certified Lover Boy: No single
Honestly, Nevermind: No single
For All The Dogs: Slime You Out

It’s likely that What Did I miss ends up being a bad choice based on his history in the 2020s when it comes to choosing singles fs. The album always has a song that ends up blowing up more than the single. I love What Did I Miss but doubt it has the crossover appeal enough for it to be a radio hit like that. He needs to make another Nokia to get that type of hit imo

If this is just a warm up single before the actual lead, then this is a great choice
But if not, then it’s a great song but doesn’t seem like a good choice for a lead single

WDIM is definitely not an ideal choice for a lead single. It doesn't check enough boxes within Drake's fan base to work as well as a lead single should but it's totally the right call to make in terms of what he should lead with for his new album era.
He's already done the R&B s*** with $$$4U and that (admittedly) performed better and was received better than I thought it would. I initially thought dropping an R&B album after the events of last year was a terrible call but again, Drake proved that he knows what's best for his own career.
I don't think Drake is expecting WDIM to be a God's Plan-level but but it does set the tone for the new album era and that's good enough. The legit smash off the album is likely still yet to be released.
Does anyone remember What’s Next? Always thought that should’ve been big as gods plan
a mental exercise for those that are interested
