Let's be real, Drake has been coastin and putting in low effort music for years. The last time I was truly hype and excited for a Drake album was before CLB dropped. He lost the beef to Push and I believe Scorpion suffered from it. That album should've had two songs max referencing the beef and the rest should've been him showing why he dominates and is at the top. It turned out to be dope but not even close to his best work, the beef shook him and affected his rollout too much. I'm willing to bet up to a third or more of that album was changed after the beef (we already know at least IMF and Mob Ties were made after the beef). At the time I didn't mind cause I thought, "oh he has something to really prove on this next one" and then CLB came and went and it was another passionless project for the most part. Not to mention he was still dwelling on the Ye beef way too much to come off as unbothered as he wanted to. Also wtf was that cover? This nigga so cringe sometimes.
This nigga is now in the same exact position except he has time to complete a project fresh out the beef. I don't think its hyperbole to say this is one of Drake's last chances to show he has a passion for rap, not just that he is capable of being the best and topping charts. He finally has something to prove again which I think is what has been missing for him. Why would he put in effort these last few years if he doesn't have to? I think if Drake puts out a rap/r&b project with REAL vulnerability without any of the tough guy s*** he can really get the pendulum to swing back in his favor.
Then again he may have fully checked out of rap and may just see it as a revenue stream at this point
Also the PND album doesn't count, I'm talking about his next solo project.
Thoughts?
now that he’ll pretty much be independent from now on i’m expecting him to start making interesting music again. songs like circadian rhythm definitely a step in the right direction
it's not that he's not committed to the art, at all
the albums are just bloated to appeal to a wide audience
yes this is the perfect opportunity to come with a concise undeniable classic

but if he was committed to his art he wouldn't bloat them for the money tho
thats always been the eternal struggle, integrity/art vs money. the fact the drake wouldn't be caught dead putting out a 12 track album speaks volumes to where his values are at
"niggas want a classic thats just ten of these" if you love hip hop like you say you do then why don't you do it for the love/culture?
It’s nearly impossible for him to make a concise album that appeals to all of his fans. It’s also not what he enjoys doing.
I agree and said this months ago as well OP

Although I agree they’re bloated it feels weird to me it’d be for money, he can’t be making that much off streams for the weak tracks relative to his overall wealth
I just don’t think he cares about making some focused classic album as much as putting out a bunch of songs he thinks sound good

if thats the case he shouldnt be as salty as he is from willingly sacrificing his spot as "the best"

It’s for the streaming numbers so him and his stans can brag about them
Just like when he put Hotline Bling on Views. To artificially inflate the streams
"Let's be real, drake has been coasting"
Stopped reading after that.
Using your opinion to get some tired take off 🗑

whats the perspective to prove otherwise? the second half of his career doesnt hold a candle to the first half

I agree & hope he truly enters a golden era artistically in the aftermath of this stuff.
but realistically I think he will do one of 2 things
One is continue business as usual, and pretend that he is unfazed by this L. I think eventually if he follows that course of action, people will accept it.
The second, less likely outcome I see is Drake just selling out in the world of Pop. Once he stops giving a f*** about how us rap fans perceive his work, I think he will probably have more joy in making music, but likely nothing like what I personally would want from Drake in the future, a marriage of Drake doing both immaculate pop and hard hitting lyricism and somehow making it work.
I personally think he'll just pretend nothing happened.
He’s not gonna tho. He’s more worried about putting out an r&b collab to try to make people forget. He keeps playing his cards wrong every chance. He needs to take a break cause he’s too jaded but he’s not gonna. You’d think with his ego that he wouldve already put out an gnx type album and get the respect he wants. I don’t see the typical Drake album formula working now that he’s lost a lot of fans and his label backing
I’m sooo drunk @drake
Wtf i gotta see this
Said it before and I’ll say it again, Drake needs to develop a serious heroin habit before recording any more music. This would be the best possible career move for him.
He would produce a deranged, dark, d***ged out experimental album that would be praised. He’d give grizzly accounts of life and the situations he gets into while being a fiend, and hustling pills on the side to fuel his addiction as people begin to distance themselves from him. Soon it would come out about his addiction and the media would be buzzing. Scandal after scandal would arise and he’d be the most talked about person in the world as he continues down this dark path of addiction and insanity. Then, he would get arrested for possession and do a stint in jail, adding credibility to the hard image he’s been trying to adopt for sometime. The #FreeDrake movement would be like nothing we’ve ever seen before and it would spark an international conversation about how we treat addicts (rehabilitative vs punitive punishment.
Drake would get out, get clean, and become the face of the opiate epidemic sweeping North America, opening him up to even wider audiences and platforms. His first album after release would sell a million first week and be praised, as Drizzy explores a whole new realm of lyrical content reflecting on his past degenerate behavior and becomes a symbol of hope for millions dealing with addiction. This would be great for his image, solidify him as one of the greatest rappers ever, and create worldwide change that benefits millions for years to come.
The best possible thing drake could do for his career is to start doing as much dog food as possible, as soon as possible.
