No, he is literally the artist that white losers that don't listen to Rap love to hate on because he's "so mainstream and overrated".

They then use Kanye or Kendrick to discredit him because they happen to like about 2 songs by either of them and they are known as cool in Kanye's case or a 'good example of what Hip-Hop should be' in Kendrick's case.

Most people who don’t listen to rap tend to love the “real hip hop” type s***.

Let’s be honest how many times have you seen niggas like that and the first thing they say is “I like the old stuff” and they mention Pac, biggie or something. Em/Kendrick (maybe cole?) are the biggest modern day examples of that type of artist so non hip hop fans are more likely to be into those guys.
