Do we know that for sure though? He released a lot of music under UMG/Republic after Scorpion and before CLB. Drake said he was out of the deal on Scorpion, Variety did a whole article in 2018 on how Drake was out of the deal and what he could possibly do.
Entirely possibly the deal started at CLB and I’m not saying you’re wrong, just an interesting piece of business to look at. That period of time between Scorpion and CLB is what is so interesting to me. There had to be something at least worked out once Dark Lane Demo Tapes came out, right? Unless he was negotiating every release with them one by one.
As at end of 2018, Drake's deal with Young Money/Cash Money was done and shortly thereafter, he entered negotiations with UMG about the deal he eventually got.
Lucian Grainge was willing to give him whatever he wanted but he still had a board to confer with and come to some sort of bargain both sides were okay with and agreed to. That took well over a year to complete but before then, Drake wanted to release music, so he released Care Package/DLDT under OVO and licensed them exclusively to UMG via Republic in good faith pending the finalization of the deal legally/officially, which was completed sometime in Q4 2020.
His deal is for 5/6 albums but the main reason he got that much money was for UMG's continued ownership of his masters from TML-Scorpion.
The deal marks his 4th deal with UMG:
- He signed a 2-album deal after dropping SFG that covered TML/TC.
- He re-negotiated terms and re-signed for 3 albums that covered NWTS/IYRTITL/WATTBA (IYRTITL was meant to drop as a free DJ Drama mixtape but Drake pivoted and got UMG to count it as an album towards his deal instead. After the success of IYRTITL and before the release of WATTBA, he negotiated similar terms to have WATTBA also count towards his deal).
- He re-negotiated terms and re-signed for 4 albums that covered Views, More Life and Scorpion (which was supposed to be 2 albums but he made it a double album and got the label to pass it off as 2 albums).

Doesn't need to be that deep. He can delay the album regardless. Her Loss was filled with summer bangers and that didn't drop till November. He can drop a pack with like 3-4 heaters. That'll be more than enough for the summer.
