Album week got me debating quitting my job (again)

After Drake's deal was up following the release of Scorpion, he had all the leverage to get a monster deal. Lucian Grainge, having a good relationship with Drake, not wanting to see him move on to a competitor label after working with him for 10 years, and knowing all the money Drake had made his label, was always gonna give Drake whatever he asked for short of him being delusional.

The best way to think of Drake's deal is how the NBA Super Max contract works. It's a franchise (label) signing a veteran player (Drake) to a significant deal based on what they've done for the franchise so far and the franchise knowing they stand to gain more keeping them than letting them go somewhere else. It's basically a loyalty deal, to reward a player for their dedication and loyalty all the years they've remained with the franchise.

The bulk of the $500M Drake will receive was for Universal to hold on to his masters/publishing for the duration of the deal and to reward him for the years/the money he'd made them so far. His deal probably has a stipulation that he'll get back the masters to an old album for every new album he gives the label and seeing as DLDT dropped under the new arrangement, my guess is he'll drop a new mixtape to count towards owning the rights to every old mixtape and drop a new album towards owning the rights to every old album.

My guess is Drake drops 6 albums + 3/4 mixtapes this decade to own back the rights to everything he dropped from 2009-2018. He's already dropped 3 albums + 1 mixtape so far this decade, with another album set to drop on Friday.

You don’t think it was a money number rather than an album number he signed for? I think he may have just signed to make them a certain amount of money, no matter the album count. That’s just speculation though.
